Thread: Sweet Abigail

  1. #1

    Default Sweet Abigail

Sweet Abigail is having some O2 issues. She had a Cyanotic Episode and was taken to the NICU where she was put on oxygen and pinked up. Her levels dipped down again once the oxygen was removed so she is being taken for a chest x-ray.

There was a lot of meconium at birth, so that's one theory. She's also been doing a lot of screaming outside of her mother's arms, so there's another.

I know everyone wants to send their positive thoughts and prayers their way, so I wanted to update and get that power activated.

Natalie and James are headed up to the NICU now.

I will keep everyone updated as updates come in.

Update: "Good news, she has fluid in her lungs but NO meconium. Her white count is way high but it's unclear if that's from infection or stress from breathing problems. They're doing a culture to check for infection. She's getting antibiotics for now just in case. She's going to have to stay in NICU until she improves though, so that sucks."

Thank you for all the t&ps, they don't go unheard!

Just a little update. They started her at 40% oxygen and she's weaned down to 24% now. Once she gets to 21% (the same as regular air) they will take the tent away and see if she can keep her blood oxygen at the right levels.

She's been breathing really fast though, probably because of the fluid and not get enough oxygen. If that doesn't change she can't feed right away because she won't be able to regulate the suck-swallow-breathe pattern. We're hoping that when the fluid is resolved her breathing will take on a normal pattern.

It's so hard to see her in the tent and not be able to really touch her or anything, especially when she's upset and just needs some comfort. I mean she's not even 24 hours old, she needs her parents!

I'm so sorry Natalie ! Praying the fluid resolves soon and she's able to keep her oxygen sat up !!

My 7y/o dd had the same issue and was on oxygen for 48hrs, but my nurse let me try to bf a little at 24hrs and she did okay...desatted a little so we held off and tried again 6hrs later. She did great at that point so they slowly weaned her oxygen which was a 2 steps forward, one step back process, but steady progress was encouraging) and just monitored her for 24hrs more. I did give her a paci during that time to calm her.

    Thinking of you !!

That's great Kelly! They are letting me use a pump and they will give her the milk via syringe until she can tolerate drinking in her own.

Update: they took her out of the tent for awhile, not sure how long, but because of her fast breathing whenever she'd cry or get upset her oxygen level would drop. So they have her set up in again at 23.5%, which is hardly any extra just enough to support her during crying.

The infection culture takes 48 hours, so she has to stay in nicu at least that long. The nurse said almost all the cultures come back negative so that is encouraging.

I know how hard it is to have a baby in the NICU, I've had 4!
But I also knew they would be there in advance and you didn't. I'm sure that is weighing on your heart.
Praying for you momma! Touch her as much as possible! Pump right next to her.
Today is a new day and babies turn corners so quickly! She could be completely off the oxygen before you know it!
