    Default Fever...secondary infection or dtap...thoughts

We do a delayed, selective vaccine schedule. Adam is 12months and received his first dtap on Thursday (the first and only vax he's ever had).

He has had a cold the last week but no fever...his sibs have had the same thing and his sister ended up with bacterial croup and bronchitis (was on a zithromax, steroid, and had an abx shot of rocephin).

This morning he has a 103 degree fever. His cough did seem a little more congested yesterday but he was acting normally and it sounded like drainage rather than chest congestion. The cough today is a little barky but not bad and his breathing is fine.

He doesn't seem like he's in pain anywhere specifically just miserable from the fever but it's hard to tell.

What are your thoughts...does this sound like a secondary bacterial infection, a new virus completely, or from the dtap (his injection site looks great...never had any redness or swelling at all)?

I think that 103 is kind of high for fever after a vaccine, my guess would be an infection that developed from the cold he has had (esp. considering that his sister got croup and bronchitis from it). Also, it could be that the cold combined with the vax may have just been too much and it's a bit of both. We did delayed vax and the only time there was any reaction (pain, throwing up, rash, etc.) from the vax, DS had a reaction at the site of the injection as well.

I would think that it could be a combination of whatever virus he likely has and then the immune response from the shot.

Way too high to blame on the shot, also too far out from Thurs. I would presume infection and get it checked out.

    Thanks ladies!!

Just got home from urgent care with my oldest. She was dxd with strep throat, sinus infection, and she has some chest congestion.

Yet Adam has no symptoms of anything...even his runny nose isn't as bad and he's not coughing today. I have an otoscope and his ears look great. No drooling and his pee/poo are normal. I suspected he was beyond the time frame for it to be the vax but I'm stumped! He's already had roseola...can they get it more than once? No rash at this point.

I think I'll just keep my eye on him for now...he's handling it fine and it comes down to 99-100 with tylenol. If he's not better by Monday I'll take him in but if he develops specific symptoms I'll take him in sooner .

Thanks again ladies for the input! It's been a looong couple of weeks with this nasty bug!! Hopefully we'll all be on the mend soon.

My rule of thumb for vax - if a child had a cold, wait till it is over + 1 more week. THEN only vax. No vax with any sort of cough and runny nose - immune system WILL react if you get vax during that time and there are higher chances of catching some nasty cold right after vax.

He ended up just having a 103 fever for two days and woke up the 3rd day fine. He has a clear runny nose again but never had symptoms beyond the cough which I think was nasal drainage. So I think you're right, it was his immune system responding to the cold + vax...not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion, his immune system is doing what it's supposed to and he's doing fine now .

Thank you again ladies for the input!
