7M old doesn't babble

Should I be concerned? She makes sounds but only vowel sounds. No babbling - dada, baba, mama... She also doesn't laugh. She makes this big huge smile and looks like she will explode but no "hahaha"

Should I be worried? Ok, well I am worried but do I have reason to be?

She sits up on her own, makes eye contact, can definitely see and hear. Otherwise developing according to schedule.

I don't think so. I don't remember my own kids being all that vocal when they were babies, either, although Katie and Nathan always have been.

Does she coo? Does she make other sounds to show excitement? I'd ask the pediatrician if there is anything to be worried about. Cody didn't babble much. He had speech therapy from 18 months- 3 years.

How is her eye contact? My oldest didn't really laugh until he was older, when he was a little baby he made this "happy squeak" noise.

Isn't your hubs a speech therapist? I thought I remembered that but maybe it was someone else;) Um. Typically by now she should be babbling and laughing. But every baby is different. I would mention to her doc and see what he thinks. Does she make fun sounds at all? Like bubbles or raspberries? I would just keep doing playful sounds with her, imitating the sounds she does make and modeling babbles and giggles and talk to doc.

My third baby wasn't making anything but cooing noises by 7months. Because she had been hospitalized at 7wks, intubated, and given a combination of drugs known to potentially cause auditory nerve damage (erythromycin and loop diuretics together are a no-no apparently) we went ahead and had her hearing tested. *Not* fun...don't recommend it unless there is significant reason to believe there is hearing loss.

Anyway, everything came back perfectly and by 9months she was my earliest talker...could clearly say whole words and string two together..."please cookie", pretty baby", etc...knocked my socks off, LOL!!!

All that to say I think it's normal. I would consult with my pedi if I were concerned though. I'm sure there's a more basic hearing test that can be done but the one we did involved sleep deprivation and took a few hours...it was *miserable*!!!

Jude was like that at that age and while he was a little on the slow end with talking he was still within normal range.

My DS never laughed as a baby seriously never. He would make a funny noise but it was not laughing. My DD is 1 and she rarely says mamma she says dadda and sometimes bubba (what we call DS) but thats it.

Yes he is - you are right! He says "not to worry" for everything so I don't listen to him anymore lol. He did say he would bring home a test he could do on her.

She had a pedi visit 2 weeks ago and I did mentioned it to the doc. She said we would keep an eye on it and just keep modeling so that is what I have been doing. She makes an MMMmmmm sound. And I guess Aaaahhhhh. That is about it. I am kind of concerned because she used to say mamamama (as a babble not really "mama") around 4 months old and now nothing. The loss of that is scaring me.

She makes excellent eye contact and can definitely see and hear. I think she can do both well. She turns right around to where a sound is coming from when she hears one.

She also makes raspberry sounds and kind of squeals. I have hear a TINY laugh but nothing like a real baby laugh.

I'd expect her to be gurgling and blowing raspberries and cooing for sure - that comes in around 4 months.. True babbling starts around 6-7 months so I would expect it to be in around now.

Or just ask your husband!

My dd never babbled, or coo'ed...even at a year. She was a very very quiet baby and toddler. She spent two years in speech therapy, and is fine now.
I would be tad worried, though I wasn't worried with my DD... I didn't believe anything was wrong, but had I known she'd need speech therapy I probably would have been worried at 7 months! Since she makes eye contact and is communicating in other ways, I wouldn't be overly concerned yet! Good luck!

The pedi mentioned with 2 older siblings she may either talk early to make sure she is heard or talk late because she can't get a word in. Perhaps the latter

I just thought of something. I wonder if we worry too much about our kids? I am not meaning this in a smart arse way. I am totally serious when you think about it all of us adults have personalities of all sorts. We are not all the same crayon that fits in the same box. Some of us are serious, some are comedians, some are in the middle, some are mean, etc. I wonder if this could be the same for babies/ children. Cody was a giggle box. Sophia needs a bit more to laugh. Sophia is more verbal and Cody wasn't. No baby is going to do the same things all the time.

none of my girls babbled (consonant vowel combos ) until closer to 9 months. The older girls are both ahead developmentally speech wise now. The laughing thing is a it more interesting....but in terms of autism they look for joyful expressions by 6 months not laughing specifically and it sounds like she is certainly doing that. If she makes good eye contact, makes sounds, and seems engaged with you and enjoys your attention/closeness, I wouldn't worry at this point...

My youngest was that way. She was very quiet, hardly ever made any noise, and I too was concerned she didn't babble by 8 or 9m my friends baby was born 2days after her and was saying all kinds of things, screeching, babbling and saying words. My baby girl laughed for the first time at 5m, which was much later than her siblings. And she only laughed once at anything. We thought she was just a serious bird. But then she got closer to a year and her personality bloomed. She is 16m now and says all kinds of things and laughss a lot. And will do anything to get a laugh.

My DS never babbled. His first consonant sound was at 9 months and I remember being a bit concerned that he only did vowel sounds. He was a bit late on all his speech sounds. By 15 months he still only had "da" and "ba." At nearly 4 he NEVER stops talking, but a lot of his sounds are still quite delayed or reversed for his age. He is getting speech at preschool, but no huge concerns.

I twins aren't making those sounds yet either and they're pretty much the same age ajdusted and Sydney is. I'm not going to worry about it until after thier next appointmnet with the pedi and developmental specialist, and even then I'll only worry if they do...

If your hubs was concerned he would let you know I bet. So since you have an in house expert I wouldn't worry much! I'm a speech-lang path and I know for me the doctor always just confirms my littles are doing what I expect them to do...he defers to me whenever i have any of those mom freak out moments about language and says "I don't know, you are the expert" So I would bet you have nothing to worry about if hubs isn't concerned. Maybe you guys just aren't funny enough to make her laugh haha. Or haven't found her sweet spot when you tickle If she is making the mmmm sound and the ahh it sounds like she is on the right track. Just keep playing with sounds with her and trying to get her to giggle that could be fun!

Libby *just* started babbling "dada" a couple of weeks ago? Okay, it was the 17th...I just checked my FB page, because I had posted it on there. Anyway, that was her first consonant sound. She has really just started belly laughing, too. She'll smile, but actual laughs we've had to work for up until recently.

I wouldn't be concerned just yet. I'm sure just as soon as you start to really worry, she'll ease your mind and start babbling away.

DS1 never babbled, but right around 6/7 months started with dada then eventually mama and other little words like that. Now he is 3 and I can't get him to be quiet! DS2 babbled a lot, did raspberries (DS1 never did) but took much longer to say any real words. He did start saying dada at 7/8 months, but then stopped and right before he turned a year old started with dada and mama again. Hes now 15 months and he tries to repeat everything we say, but that's it, doesnt really say words other than mama and dada on his own.

Same with DD2. She was stuttering something awful for months. I completed the process of getting her evaluated. She hasn't stuttered since.
