Wow, FourGulls! How cool that doc felt your baby's head!!

They checked me for strep B at my first prenatal visit way back at the beginning. It came back Positive (first time I've ever had it and it's in my 5th pregnancy, go figure) So they treated me with antibiotics way back when. I see everyone else is getting tested now, makes me wonder is it odd that I was tested and treated so early?

We keep my appointments few and far between because I've had so many uncomplicated pregnancies and my doc is a fabulous laid back hippy. She says if I don't feel like coming in and I feel fine, then no worries. I trust my instincts and listen to my body so if something gets weird, I'll just high tail it into her office. We did keep an appointment yesterday because my husband wanted to ask about the difference between DVT and varicosities. Our update is: Fundus measured right on schedule, baby's heart rate was great, my bp was 110/60 it never seems to change, and I've gained 19 lbs. (Thank you chewy chocolate chip cookies!)

She doesn't check my cervix, come to think of it, she only ever checked in the beginning to be sure cervix was closed up tight and to swab for tests. Is that unusual?

my3sons - I have a friend who was tested way early, but it was because they had a reason to suspect she might have it. Since she had it early on, they did give her antibiotics at the time, but also she didn't have to get swabbed for it later as the protocol then became just to give her antibiotics during labor. That's great that your doctor is so laidback! And yay for everything being perfect! I don't think the cervix checks are really a big deal, honestly. I prefer to have them, but I have learned from my own (and other people's) experiences that they really don't tell you much! So if your doctor is more of a naturalist I'm not surprised she doesn't bother with them! I'm sure you could request one if you were curious though. How far along are you? They usually start them at 36/37 weeks depending on the doc! I have my 2nd one today - can't wait to see if all these contractions are doing anything! I'm guessing not, haha.

    Thought you might like this:
"Furthermore, research has shown that the performance of multiple vaginal examinations can be a risk factor for maternal or fetal infection. The authors of a term prolonged rupture of membranes (PROM) study point out that the number of vaginal examinations is more predictive of maternal infection than duration of membrane rupture (Seaward, PG et al, 1997). Maternal infection may occur during labor (chorioamnionitis) or after birth (postpartum endometritis), and prolonged rupture of membranes and multiple vaginal examinations are known risk factors for the development of maternal and neonatal infection.

Limiting vaginal examinations cannot be overemphasized. Women with pre-labor rupture of membranes should not receive vaginal examinations until after labor begins and then only when the results are necessary to guide or alter management." http://w3.rn.com/News/clinical_insig....aspx?Id=30142

I've been checked but no change yet here. I'll likely get my GBS swab on Monday at my next appt.

    Check #2 update!

So last week I was softening, and that was it. Today I am softening AND thinning, but no dilation yet. Also, baby has moved into a -2 station, which isn't much, but at least it's something! My OB said he definitely does not expect me to go into labor before my next checkup. A part of me is a little disappointed not to have ANY dilation at all (I don't want baby girl to come yet, but it would be nice to see my body is doing something). but on the other hand, I'm glad she will keep baking for now, and we could use the extra time to get ready!

It feels very surreal! I don't really have much else to get ready so we are just trying to enjoy these last few days in this chapter of our lives. It is so strange to me to think about never being pregnant again but on the other hand I am SO ready to be done with this phase. I do still need to fix up our changing table downstairs. That shouldn't take a whole day though, just finding the energy is getting tough.
