Default Anyone watch Business of Being Born??

I had watched it when it first came out years ago.. I think it was in 2008. I just watched it again and saw that they made other episodes "More Business of Being Born" They are all on Netflix streaming.

It was pretty neat watching it while I am actually pregnant. It got me excited about delivery and my birth plan. It also made me a bit anxious because I still haven't gotten to actually talk to my new OB about how she feels about unassisted/non invasive delivery. If she isn't on the same page as me I don't know what I will do since I am very limited in my choices there is only 1 midwife and I really don't care for her. I'm also nervous because I've never delivered in this hospital and I haven't even done a tour yet lol appearantly 10W is a bit early to schedule a tour?? I want/NEEEEEED a tub it's really my only request in the delivery room.

I don't want an IV, I don't want a fetal monitor on all the time, I must be able to walk and birth how I want (not flat on my back) and I want to be in the tub during most of the early/middle contractions because it makes it so much easier to do naturally. This is how my second son was born and it was amazing!

My concerns are that I had very fast deliveries and I know that the nurse already brought up the induction idea at our first consaltation. I said NO but I don't know if that will keep coming up. I'm also nervous about the delivery time as well considering I do live over 40mins from the hospital.

BLEH so much to think about! Am I the only one overthinking things this early?

I have not seen that. I will look for it. Since this is my first baby I feel clueless! My OB gave me a booklet they put together with a suggested timeline so I guess I am going by that.

I loved watching that with my first pregnancy and I am just finding out about the second one. I need to watch it as well. I wish I had more options but I am so limited with my Addison's disease. I wanted to do a VBAC this time around but my endocrinologist doesn't think it's the best option for my safety so we will be doing another c section. The emergency c section was pretty hard on my system with Jax after being in labor for 20 hours.

It was a great watch for first time moms. It's probably still a great watch even after a couple babies lol depends on if you're more into natural childbirth like I am though =)

Yes it is mainly about letting your own body guide your delivery and how the intervention of doctors and hospitals are essentially impeding on a natural practice. All of which I believe strongly on. It touches on how csections are WIDELY overused as convenience instead of high risk which was what was intended. They highlight natural home births which I'm still a little unsure about but it wasn't to harsh about shoving NATURAL down your throat.. though they really do get their opinions across.

Ricki Lake was the executive producer, she is in it a lot and shows her home birth.

It was interesting when they touched on the actual history of birth and shift from midwives to doctors and the drugs they used and processes they started taking. Some of it was pretty gruesome!

Yeah poor Dh! This was the first pregnancy video we had watched together with the first pregnancy and he was a little freaked out. I wanted a home birth and to do it all natural! But my body just can't do it which is one thing I didn't like about the video. I have gotten a lot of crap over just letting my body do what it was made to do. I can't just chance things with having Addison's disease. My body doesn't respond we'll to stress that's put on it and in emergencies when your body produces adrenaline to help you through a crisis...mine doesn't and it can send me into adrenal shock and kill me. I discussed many options with my OB and my endo doctor while being pregnant. The wanted to be able to control my labor and monitor me as soon as it started. They also did not want me to do it natural because they were too worried aout what stress labor would put on my body Without meds and if i would make it to be ale to push. A 39 weeks I was developing pre e and was sent in for an induction. That way they could monitor my Addison's disease as well as my blood pressure. After 20 hours of labor I was stuck at 8cm and my body was starting to fail me and Jaxons heart rate was starting to fluctuate. They suggested that I needed a c section. I was devastated but admitted defeat since Jax was the most important thing and I needed to be there and healthy if I was going to take care of him. After that craziness I have thought long and hard about it all and I am just going to have another c section this time around. Emergency c sections are no fun! And for me it's less risky.

That's one reason that I don't like the natural movement because they are just as set against assisted as the assited/dr births are to natural home births lol it's like gang wars! For some people there has to be a middle ground and for others *Like you* it's just not safe.

It was nice to see the producer Abby end up having to have an emergency csection at the end and show that her midwife was actually encouraging her to go so that you could see that midwives aren't going to force you into an unsafe situation.

LOL My DH won't watch pregnancy shows with me, they freak him out. He gets really nervous about delivery.

    *SIDE NOTE*
Has anyone watched the new movie, What to Expect? DH and I thought it was pretty cute. Warning it shows an early loss

I am all for being natural! I wanted a natural home birth, to breast feed for as long as possible, and to never buy jar baby food! But not everything worked in my favor obviously lol I was glad to only have to miss out on the home birth. I loved being able to breast feed for 13 months and I am still making baby food since my picky little eater has MAJOR texture issues. I swear its paybacks since Dh and I were both super picky eaters when we were little.

I just finished watching the newer one. It hit a lot more on how they only take low risk women and that they screen to make sure that the mother is healthy. I really liked that they didn't push the issue on it being natural and for everyone. It made me sad all over again that I can't have the birth that I always dreamed about. But getting the baby here safe and me being safe is more important. I'm just envious of the women who can have babies so naturally. I want to load up and go live on that farm!! Haha I have always been more of a "hippy" for the lack of better words.

Also...Justin loves watching things with me. Or he used to....I think I burned him out on it. I just love watching stuff like that and I am pretty sure I am going to go into the field of natural birth or lactation once the kiddos are old enough! I just fascinates me what the female body can do and what some of our bodies like mine fight so hard against! Breast feeding was such a HUGE challenge for me. But so worth it

We loved that movie but I was unaware of the early lose in it and wish I would've known ahead of time. =( the last loss is still a little heartbreaking at times and that just let all the emotions pour back into my mind. Even Dh cried. ESP during the csection in the end since he faced some of the same fears.

Ok, I might be the odd ball here so please don't shoot. I have absolutely nothing against Natural birth and I admire the women who go that route. It is just not for me, I don't like pain, I went into labor and asked for an epi at 2cm, 3 hours later I was put on pitocin, and three hours later after 30mins of pushing my son was here, healthy as ever and I got to enjoy every minute of it without the pain. I guess the ones who go all natural say they enjoy it as well so is all a matter of what level of pain you are able to handle and enjoy at the same time. I don't need the whole empowerment of "I went all natural, like it was supposed to be from the begining of time" which they mentioned in this movie, i think the first three months of getting to know this little person, staying awake endless nights and keeping this new human being alive gives all the empowerment I need as a mother. I think Natural, medicated or c-section does not make you a better, more powerfull mother, everything that comes after that day does.
That said, I know all moms who go the Natural way don't think they are being better or stronger than the rest, they just have the need and desire to experience all that and thankfully thanks to these midwives they have a way to accomplish it. So it is all good, the options need to be available for what each mother decides is her best route.
The doctors and hospitals are not the evil, they are for people like me who really don't care if they have to fill a bed and empty it in a timely manner, as long as I come out of there with my bundle of joy.

So specially to the first time moms, I tell you, make the birth plan that you feel will best suit you, but in the end if it doesn't work the way you expect and you end up with medication or even a c-section, don't feel like you've been cheated, you can't be cheated if you end up with a healthy baby in your arms.
