Default DH, "but I didn't hear her..."

Last weekend, 6 days ago, I took a 4 hour nap while dh played with dd. when I woke up I checked her diaper and saw she had a little bit of poop in her diaper and also had a bad rash from it. I asked dh why did he change her diaper in 4 hours and he said that he didn't hear her poop/fart ugh! Really!? He went 4 hours without even checking!!!

So now it's been 6 days of diaper rash. I've been changing her very frequently and used Burt's bees for a little bit, didn't help, and now I'm using A&D ointment which kinda helps. It looks like its almost gone but I can't believe it took so long to clear up!

Is that too long to have a little rash? What kind of butt cream/ointment do you use?

That's the last time I take a nap

For my kids I would say yes, that seems like a long time for a normal poop diaper rash. However, when they are teething their poop turns bionic and even if you catch it within minutes of it happening my kids seem to get a rash from that. So needless to say if they sit in it for longer it just gets worse. Those take closer to a week to heal. But then again it just might be the teething poop redepositing and causing more and continued irritation.

Good luck! Fwiw...he didn't t HEAR her poop? I am a SAHM and I think I maybe have heard the kids a handful of times! Men are so weird!

It can take a lot of time for it to go away. What helps is to wash instead of wiping, airing out (pat dry and go diaperless for as long as possible), and we use Triple Paste. Mira has never had a diaper rash, but my nephew has had several (sensitive skin), and that's the regimen that helps clear things up quickly.

Ds2 has very sensitive skin and it takes a long time to clear a rash. We use desitin when he is in sposies and vaseline when he is in cloth.

How does one go diaperless? When she goes pee if she had no diaper her pee would get on the carpets.

    Geez!

I think that's about the length of time it took DS to heal from the last rash. We use Dr. Smith's or Triple Paste.

What SIL used to do was to put him on floors that are easy to clean (kitchen, bathroom) until he did pee, and then have him roam for a bit because she knew there wouldn't be any more peeing for another 15 minutes at least.

    Oh I see.

Balmex has good reviews and so does triple paste. I wonder why Burt's bees doesn't work on dd.

Last time DS had a really bad rash (so bad he wouldn't even sit in the bathtub) I'd lay out a trash bag on our bed and put a few layers of towels on top. He'd lay there all spread out watching his favorite show for 30 min while he got some air down there. I think that helped the most.

And if you have a yard, the kid can run around outside without a diaper on.

I have had wonderful results using Boudreaux's Butt Paste. With any ointment or cream, be sure the bottom is completely dry before applying. You don't want to seal in the moisture.

I use Desitin and then A&D if it doesn't help. However, I've had the best luck with lanolin so when I'm breastfeeding and have that around that seems to help the quickest.

It's funny - I think it totally depends on the kid, their skin, their type of poop (BF, FF or real food), etc.

DD3 has been getting nasty diaper rashes and I really don't know why. I was using Bouardoux (bad spelling!) and it sucked. Then Desitin I think made it WORSE. It was red and raw and she screamed during diaper changes!

A pediatric nurse gave me this "secret potion" recipe: 1 part A+D clear cream plus 1 part zinc cream and add some maloox. Mix it together until it's the consistency of cake icing. Well I was all excited to try this. It hardly worked at all

The ONLY thing that works for DD3 is the A+D white ointment.

OH also - the wipes you are using may not be helping matters. I was using unscented target brand on DD and she would scream. I started to use a washcloth with warm water and not only did she not scream, it started to clear up finally. I also make sure her butt is DRY before applying cream. I agree with letting it air out if you can. I can't (or am not willing) to do it with a NB.

Oh and DH is lame! I would have been pissed

Does nobody use powder anymore? I know baby powder is icky....but I used to watch a little one who had awful poo and rashes and I was told to use a bit of corn starch in there to help with moisture. Just would sprinkle by fingers so there wasn't any flying in the air for the little guy to inhale. Seemed to help.

I can get not hearing it happen....but how did the DH not SMELL it happen?????

Corn starch is a no no for little girls because it changes the vaginal pH. For boys it would probably be helpful with the wet clammy friction rashes from the inside of folds, but with poop irritation I find a slather/salve is usually better at aiding the healing. Personally I have always liked Triple paste for my first baby, or lanolin at night with a cotton prefold and wool cover for breathability, but for some reason only at night. During the day I don't see the improvement with it.

My dd3 is just getting over a "sat in poop without us knowing it" rash (she was playing for over an hour outside-usually she tells us right away but this time she was having too much fun. ) It wasn't 4 hours but as Jeanne said I think it was a particularly acidic poop because she had oranges that day, and it was hot, so something got cooked up. It's not that bad, but it's her first rash since...geez I dunno when, so I'm just going through the arsenal I used to use with my first daughter to see what helps her. She's not that prone to them, unlike my first who had every kind of yeast and irritation known to man (she has eczema).

Lily has constipation issues, which usually means a lot of rashes...strange as it sounds. We have a heck of a time getting her rashes to clear up when she has one, we use the butt paste (it is paraben free which we like) which does work but nothing works fast. We did notice this last time, her rash was about half way to being gone and we spent 5 hours in Grandma's pool...it was gone the next day or day after...like GONE. So try getting her in the pool, I have a feeling it was the chemicals drying it out the rest of the way that did it.

Ok so how do I know if her poop is acidic Or not?

I will try dunking her butt in the pool....

I'm also gonna get some balmex, butt paste, and whatever else looks good.

It's never been 4 hours, but my DH has missed poops too. Apparently he doesn't have "mommy nose" or think to check because that's my job

For Trinity we used Butt Paste and it worked wonderfully.

For Anastasia Butt Paste worked not at all. But A+D did work.

Could it be yeast? Sometimes that happens if poop gets into even a tiny blemish that was on her bottom. If that's the case your pedi can prescribe Nystatin. It works wonders. Yeast will be kind of splotchy and red and won't go away with normal ointments or creams. (Anastasia has had a few yeast rashes)

It seems to be finally clearing up....I put Shea butter on her butt. I didn't know it could be yeast, geez lol.

If it's clearing up, it's not yeast. I'm glad she's feeling better!

We've always used Butt Paste and have had very few diaper rashes in 3 yrs, even though my DS has sensitive skin. I know a lot of people don't like to use it preventatively, but it worked for us to use it after all poops and baths (even without diaper rash). I think he once had a lingering rash, and the airing out method helped.

Your DH not smelling it is too funny to me. My DH had a diving accident and can barely smell anything, but he can smell poopy diapers! I do think men are more apt to forget the simple things, like feeding and changing, because they aren't as used to the routine. Once when I went to the doc and came home a couple of hrs later, I asked what he gave DS for lunch, and he said he didn't know he was supposed to give him lunch--despite that it was now past lunch time. Poor kid had asked daddy for 2 bowls of Goldfish crackers, which you'd think would be a hint that he was hungry. Sigh.
