    Default Well, it happened!!

We are expecting our second. Just found out like two days ago. We haven't told any of our family members because we want it to be confirmed by a doctor. Well, there is a problem now. I don't have insurance. My mother and I were on an insurance plan for a while, and she decided to cancel it without letting me know. (Big problem because I needed it for my thyroid blood tests in order to get my medication.) Well, she ended up getting her own through one of our hospitals. I just called them to see if I can get some type of coverage, and I can't get in until next month. I'm needing some prenatal care and confirmation so that we can make an announcement.. Does anyone have any idea how I can see a doctor until I get insurance?

Congratulations!! You could always look for resources in your community. Planned parenthood will see you on a sliding scale as well. Most doctors won't see you before 8-10 weeks anyway, not even to confirm unless you have a history of losses.

I was going to say the same thing! Congratulations!! Unless you need specific prenatal care for medical reasons, you will be okay for a month! On my first doctors visit, I peed in a cup and they confirmed the pregnancy no different that me peeing on a stick. It's not till 10 weeks that my doctor attempts for further confirmation (using the doppler to find heart beat, etc) and then I get sent for blood work done at my 10 week appointment. Good luck!

This. You can buy prenatal vitamins OTC and be seen in a month. Most docs won't see you until 8-10 weeks regardless.

Hi, I just saw this. You need to make sure you get in to see a Dr ASAP. If you take thyroid meds, it's vital to have your levels checked in early pregnancy and the meds adjusted for pregnancy. You need to let the Dr know you take thyroid meds. The first trimester is extremely important for development, and your meds should be adjusted in the first 2 months to prevent all kinds of issues. For a "normal" pregnancy, waiting until 10-12 weeks is fine, but when you take thyroid meds it's vital to be seen earlier. Most states will let you temporarily get on Medicaid if you're pregnant, even if you have a job, until you can get your insurance in order.

ITA with this. It is very common to have to increase the dose of your thyroid meds during pregnancy, and it is VERY important that your levels stay in the normal range. My thyroid meds have not needed adjusted this time around, at least not yet. But, my TSH levels did go up (but still under 2.95, which is the upper end of the range in pregnancy). So your meds may not need to be adjusted anyway. But it is not something you want to risk.

Yeah I agree with the previous two posters. I had thyroid cancer and when I got pregnant my doctor tested me sometime on jan 6 and it was normal. I had to see my endo on jan 25 and my numbers rose from .124 to 1.493 in few days. I know those numbers are normal for normal ppl but since I had cancer my doctor is watching me like a hawk.

I did not have coverage, I will tell you that I had to go on the state insurance because nobody would give me coverage since I was already pregnant. If state insurance is an option you can go to the hospital business office and get you some emergency coverage and have a state insurance card to you in a few weeks. You may need a confirmation of pregnancy, which an OBGYN will not do without maternal coverage most of the time, so you may need to go to a clinic of some sort. It was a complicated and frustrating process for me! I hope it works out well for you.

Just wanted to say that I called and spoke to the office manager of the OB and explained my situation, and they saw me right away, and then helped me get the temporary coverage and I was covered within 2 days. You never know unless you ask.
