Default What do you do with Left over Onion?

Im making Meatloaf tonight for the family, and Katrina will only eat Onion and certian veggies if I mix it in the loaf, I was raised to put the left over onion in a baggie then into the freezer.

Dh Thinks its completely weird, I was wondering What do you do with yours?

I put it in the freezer too. I hate chopping onions, so I will get several onions-chop and freeze. Then when I need them for cooking they are ready.

I never even thought to freeze onions! That's smart. I usually manage to use mine before they go bad. I make salsa, eat with tuna, cook with sauteed spinach...mmm i love onions.

so it doesn't ruin the texture??

I use onions almost every day, so putting in the fridge is no big deal for me since they get used quickly.

We always cut off what we need, stick it in a container and stick it back in the fridge.

Nope doesnt ruin the texture, It actually freezes the juice (flavor) into it, I've done this for many years.

We dont use onions enough to put them into the fridge

Sometimes I put it in the fridge and sometimes I add it to my freezer bag of broth veggies. I wouldn't put it in the freezer if i was going to use it again for anything besides broth.

We use a lot of onion, but if I don't use the whole onion at once I just put the rest in a baggie and in the veggie drawer.

I put leftover in the fridge. We eat a lot of onions so it doesn't last long enough to stick it in the freezer, but I don't see freezing them being a problem. I have bought frozen onions before when I was in a hurry and didn't want to chop onions. Only I wouldn't eat them raw after freezing them. And we eat a lot of our onions raw.

I always use at least one onion in a recipe, never less, LOL. Never been a problem for me. But I would probably freeze it - I've bought frozen ones before to use for cooking with when I was in a hurry.

Yup, same here. I have a good gallon sized bag of chopped onion in the freezer.

My niece did a science project on Onions and crying while cutting... she found that the colder they are, the less likely you are to cry. Just thought I'd share it on this topic. We personally do not eat enough onions so I buy tiny ones...

I usually put it in the fridge. Freezing would probably be a good idea for us though, we don't use onions that often.

That's very interesting! I might just start putting all my onions in the freezer for this reason alone! And it certainly does make sense. The onions I cut directly from the store I think my eyes water more than the ones that have been in the fridge.

And to answer the question, I cut the onion then put the left over in the baggie and then in the fridge. We go through a lot of onions and go through them quickly.

Same here--freezer. In the fridge, they stink and we never seem to use them fast enough.

Fridge. And yes they do make you cry much less when cold! I have thought about freezing before. I freeze chopped celery and that works great (use in soups, chili, sloppy joes....cannot tell it was ever frozen).
