Got Chicken pox on 7th week of pregnancy- Please help me to protect my baby from birth defects
Hi,
I am Prasanna from Chennai. I got married on March, 2012. I am currently in my 9th week of pregnancy and I got Chicken pox on 7th week of my pregnancy.
I consulted few gync in Chennai they all suggest for termination of baby as the virus may affect the baby's Central Nervous System.
During Chicken pox I got only rashes on skin, no fever, no headache, no vommitting and no indigestion. Other than rash I don't had any issues.
So I hope that my baby haven't get affected.
Please help me with your suggestion to protect my baby without any birth defects.
Is there any scans or any tests through which we can find whether the baby got infected or not?
Is there any treatment to protect the baby from infection?

I had chicken pox when pg with my oldest. But I got it at the beginning of the 2nd trimester. With in a day of breaking out in the rash I was sent for an injection of IgG. It was more to help lessen the severity of the disease for me rather than protect my baby. Chicken Pox in adults can be life threatening in itself. I was told by my OB that chicken pox in the first trimester is serious. Like your MD said, it can affect the central nervous system. That being said I was seen by a perinatologist every two weeks with u/s to follow my baby's development. She did have some liver/common bile duct scarring but is now a happy and healthy 11 year old. I would get a second opinion and see what the next MD says. Good luck to you and I'm so sorry that you are going through this tough time!
