Default How long do you keep your school age child out for illness?

Savana had an ugly run in with a tummy bug and was laid up all weekend pretty much had diarrhea and throwing up. Sunday she started to get her appetite back but slept most of the day. I kept her home today and she's feeling much better, not flushed and feverish, energy level okay, eating normally but still had diarrhea three times today. My concern of course is spreading it to other children but also her comfort. Diarrhea sucks bad enough without having to deal with it in a "public" restroom. Also I've been helping her since her bum is so sore from all the time she spent in the bathroom all weekend. Ugh, that's just the worst feeling ever.
Would you keep her home one more day?

I would keep her home until her diarrhea is cleared up, like you said that is horrible at a public restroom. Not to mention, embarrassing for the child. And when you are sick, you just want your momma. Hope she feels better soon!

I would go for 24 hours since the last diarrhea incident.

I would keep her home one more day, more for own comfort than anything else.

I would keep her home one more day if it were me. Poor girl, I hope she is feeling 100% very soon.

I would keep her home at least one more day. Hope she feels much better soon and the rest don't get it.

Definitely keep her home-for comfort if for no other reason. I think a lot of times kids get sent back too early because they're perky and running around find but with diarrhea they really should be home, for germs and because of how tough it can be on a kid to have an accident or be ouchy on their bum at school.

I'd also keep her home for another day.

I don't know if it's the same in schools, but I work at a health care facility, and the guidelines for returning to work after vomiting or diarrhea are that you must be symptom-free for 48 hours before returning. Our childcare providers for DD have basically the same guidelines if she has been throwing up or having diarrhea.

I would agree with symptom free for at least 24 hours for her own benefit and other kiddos too. Hope she feels better soon!

48 hours since the incident and she should be incident free during those 48 hours. Hope she recovers fast!!!

This is the rule at Josh's preschool.
