Hi I am FTM and we love our PCP who also sees infants. I was wondering if it is a must to choose a pediatrician or a PCP would do?
Thanks

We have our girls see a pediatrician.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! We use our family doctor! Personally, we like it much better than a Ped. We tried two different practices in our area and did not like that we saw a different doctor each time we went. Our family doctor treats all eight of us and know us personally without our charts.

Your can see your family doctor if you want! It's kind of great for one doctor to know your whole family. The only reason to find a pediatrician is if you want to be able to talk about developmental kind of things with someone who has a great deal of experience. I enjoy spending time with my pediatrician's NP at the well child visits. The office is great for discussing all things infant/child related.
ETA: Somehow I missed adding my last thought. Which was: We started with my daughter's pediatrician when we first moved to OH because my aunt recommended her. But if I had not had the recommendation and had been seeing the PCP that I started seeing here I would have taken DD to him as well. I really like him a lot and I always feel like my questions are answered very thoroughly. He has said a couple of times that he'd be happy to see the whole family, and I would bring DD to him if I hadn't already connected so well with the pedi office.

I see a doctor who has specialized in women's and children's health so it's only DH who sees a different doctor. A doctor doesn't need to be a pediatrician to be specially trained in children's health and development.

Thanks ladies I am going to stick with my family doctor and do trust her a lot. Because I know that my family doctor will refer us to a specialist in a heartbeat if she doesn't know what's going on.
Thanks for your input.
DS sees a Pedi because I prefer to have some one specialized in children to work with him. With my niece(13) we still have her see the Pedi but will be taking her to see a PCP because of her getting older and needing more woman related things. Now once she is old enough then she may choose to switch to a GYN but that is her choice of when.
I used to get my paps done at my family doctor but switched to a OB gyn when I had trouble ttcing. My pcp has referred me to endocrinologist, my husband to a neurologist so I have no doubt that she would do the same thing to the baby if there is a need to do it.
my kids used to have a pediatrician, we switched a couple times and i didn't like any. i started going to a new primary care office where i see my obgyn and once saw a different doc. i liked him so much i switched all the kids to him. i've seen him several times for my prenatal visits last pregnancy and this one and he delivered my youngest son. we love him, and he has a really good rep with pediatrics
