Default reading the bible to/with children

I'm trying to find a good routine in a few things for our family. We have some picture book bibles (actually 5) LOL! But I'm wanting something more. Maybe like a devotional? idk?

What type of bible to you read with your kids? And when? I find sometimes that night time is a crazy time. Dinner, daddy comes home and everyone gets hyped up, baths, we sometimes watch a little tv-depending what's on or how we're feeling. We read a story and then it's time for bed. We sometimes read our bible at this time but it seems like the kids are pretty tired and they aren't focusing as well as I know they can/should.

Maybe just read a bible story every night and do a devotional once a week? idk? Looking for ideas/thoughts/opinions.

    Thanks

We usually do bible stores (from the Jesus story book bible) before bed, but Im also looking for something a bit more, Tristyn is defiantly ready for something deeper, but at night (bedtime) Kaelyn can't focus for long so its not the time to do it for us...

We like the Jesus Storybook Bible, too. But my friend Carrie is coming out with a book soon: http://aneverydaymama.com/ She started out reading one chapter of the Bible every morning at breakfast to her kids. I'm hoping with next year's schooling, dh will take charge of the Bible teaching/curriculum, but I haven't found anything yet.

This looks good, too, based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism: http://www.amazon.com/Training-Heart...l_mb_hu_m_3_dp

We have a couple picture bible stories books and read them nightly. Also review a bit what we read the night before (and it's pretty amazing what she retains!)
Though my DD is younger than yours. What we do now is fine for her depth needs. I figure at some point we will just go straight to reading from the bible.

We read the King James version of the Bible. We read directly from that and then go through and talk about what we read down on their level. At our church that's the version of the Bible that is used and I personally have never cared for reading any other versions. I have found my girls are able to understand the general idea of most stories and verses now that we've been doing it for awhile. I usually take like 4 verses at a time to talk about.

Now that they're reading they each read one-or more if they want-and we talk about it afterward. Last year about December Keira was struggling to put all the pieces to reading together. She was just so close, but not quite there. About that time we started having her "read" a verse every night-repeating after us as we followed along with our finger-and within a month or so it's like it all just clicked to her. She read more fluently from the scriptures than she did from the little books being sent home from school. Eventually it all really came together and her reading just really took off. Scharae seems to be the same way-she is reading a bit better from the scriptures than from the books from school. I really feel like using the scriptures as a teaching tool even for the basics of reading is a great way to lay a foundation of reading the scriptures, but also for other reading. If they can read from them, they should most definitely be able to read from any other book!

I have long story short and some of it is great and some of it is REALLY over my girls head. Like one question was how is God making Adam and Eve's clothes from animal skin like Jesus dying on the cross. HARD!! It gives answers to the parents but still... wasn't quite what I was looking for at this time. Maybe when they are in 3rd grade??

Thanks though. We do sometimes read our bible in the mornings at breakfast (and I've liked that bc everyone is more alert than at night) but often I'm running around trying to get everyone ready for something (bc I don't wake up before the kids do so I'm not prepared). I'm going to work really hard at that this week. If I'm prepared for the day, then I can be a better more prepared mommy and do the things I want for them.

I'm going to keep the jesus story book for now (I do like that one) and I bought a girls devotional I plan to start working through once or twice a week in addtion to reading the bible. I just want us to have a more formal?? Not sure if that's the word I want to use) time for going through the bible as a family. I feel like we haven't had time lately or have been too tired and I don't want that to already be an excuse I pass down for my girls. I need to be their example and lately, well, I've just sucked!

Praising God for a fresh new day tomorrow

this is awesome. We use kjv too and have isaiah memorize in kjv. I like the american standard but we generlly use kjv only around here.

we read a chapter after breakfast every day. Then we do a bible verse a week we talk about it. Memorize it. Sing songs to it. Make it real and apply to everyday life.

once the boys get older I was thinking I would have them draw pictures about the chapters we read. I would be curious to what they picked up on. :-)
