that was great!!
I always find it humerous when believers make a statement about something God clearly doesn't like (with scriputure to support it) like abortion is wrong (ETC) and non believers throw the "don't judge" statement. I've seen it done with homosexuality a lot lately. It's ok to agree that something like this IS in fact against what the bible teaches. It doesn't mean a christian doesn't like the person, though. I disagree with a lot of my friends lifestyles but love them as friends. (hope I articulated this well)??
Great article.
Question: where in the Bible does scripture prohibit abortion?
The answer to that is likely to go back to what/when a person considers life. Murder=taking a life. If one believes fertilization, conception, or even heartbeat as the inception of life then abortion=taking a life=murder. And the bible is very clear on murder. However, if one doesn't take the Bible to be law or if they have a different view of the inception of life, I guess the answer would be different.
Gotcha. Thanks, Tif.
It was an honest questioon, btw. I did not know if there were scriptures that spoke specifically about unborn babies.
It's a good question.
One scripture that comes to mind about unborn babies is Psalm 139. Verses 13-16:
13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.[a]
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.
Of course this is a psalm and therefore poetic in nature, but I think we can infer that God knows us and is wonderfully making us before we are born.![]()
I don't think there are verses specific to unborn babies, but I may be wrong on that. Everything I have read goes back to "thou shalt not kill" and the definition of life.
There is also the bit in Exodus 21 that if a pregnant women is injured in anyway and her unborn baby is born, any harm to the baby must be paid for "life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, stripe for stripe." So, if causing a baby to be born by accident is a big deal, wouldn't it be a bigger deal to do so intentionally?
But this in an aside.
I also enjoyed the blog post. When the Bible is clear about a sin, it is not judgmental to state what God states since there in never an acceptable excuse for sin. We are however, never to judge motives/the heart for only God can know that.
Love this! And yes, the misinterpretation of the "judge not" verse drives me crazy. lol
As for the abortion question, there are many verses related to it in the Bible. It talks many times about how God specifically forms us in the womb by His own hand and mentions us by name, how he set apart prophets before they were born, how the baby in Elizabeth's womb "lept for joy" when Mary approached, etc. Those speak to how life begins at conception. The verse Jessica posted shows how God considers the killing of an unborn life as important as one already born.
But anyway... I've been wanting to read this post and finally got a chance. Thanks for posting it.![]()
