Default Gender determination at 16 days

Came across this and found it....interesting I worry about people who are comfortable terminating pregnancies that aren't up to their standards. I couldn't imagine people finding out gender so soon.

That is just disturbing! I don't see any need to determine a child's gender that early. In fact I know several couples who chose not to discover their baby's gender until birth!

It figures this research would be in woman hating Tel Aviv.

I can't say that I think that it is a good thing, either.

I don't mind this. If a woman is going to terminate because of gender, she is better off not becoming a mom. And this could be VERY useful in cases of genetic diseases that are gender related.

I don't see what finding out at 16 days vs 16 weeks will do for a gender specific genetic disease? This makes it ok to terminate? Or I misunderstood

There are certain very bad genetic diseases that affect only boys or only girls. If I knew there was a strong genetic history in the family of those diseases and I was carrying a child of that gender, yes I do believe that it is ok to terminate. I value life so much that I do not feel morally right bringing someone into the world that doesn't stand a chance at a normal or somewhat normal life. I do not want to bring someone into the world that is going to suffer greatly.

And as a woman who dearly wants a child, I would MUCH rather terminate at 16 days than at 16 weeks.

Woman-hating Tel Aviv?? Keep in mind that when researchers make this sort of discovery it's often done in the process of researching something else (which may seem more worthy of research than even early determination of gender).

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with early gender determination. Or termination at that point. IMO, children that are unwanted are better off not being born.

I agree. I mean I would LOVE if unwanted kids were given up for adoption....but in reality, they aren't. It's the parents that love and want their kids that make the most selfless choice.

I agree. It is amazing that they could figure out the gender so early IMO.

Wow! I think this is awesome! It never would of occurred to me that people would use this as a reason to terminate a pregnancy... I just think I would love to know so early on if it was a boy or a girl.

I didn't even know I was pregnant until the 6 week mark with my son and 5 week mark with my daughter so this is sort of odd to me. I am not against the blood work though and the thought of people terminating because this didn't even come to mind.

I was thinking of this thread last night and remembered the old wives tale that if you have bad morning sickness, you pregnant with a girl, and no morning sickness means boy. It seems to make sense that higher hormone levels would coincide with more morning sickness.

So basically science is "discovering" something old wives knew about a long time ago.

I was horrendously sick with both of my pregnancies. First one was my dd and the second one was my ds. I would say I was more sick with ds than dd. So I think the old wives tale is just that. An old wives tale.

It really saddens me that anyone would terminate a pregnancy for any reason.

We terminated our very wanted little bean last fall when the baby was diagnosed with a fatal chromosomal abnormality, and in the process of dying, the placenta began to detach and the blood loss threatened my life. It was a decision that I struggled with more than I thought I would, given the circumstances.

I'm sorry if that "saddens you" but I was grateful that there was something we could do.

I want to say I tried to be lighthearted in this discussion because I do think gender determination is a neat thing that doctors can do, but it seems like you are driving this thread to be an anti-abortion rant, which is unnecessary and offensive to me.

It seems to me that the article simply reported objectively on a scientific advancement, which in and of itself I think is very cool.

Personally, I don't see the logic behind having a negative opinion of a new innovation - ignoring all its other positive uses - only because someone somewhere might do something with it that isn't acceptable to one's own value system. To me, that's like wishing the internet was never invented because it could be used as a tool by sexual predators. Or Justin Bieber (to come up with an example of something unsinister, but equally distasteful to some ;)). In and of itself, I think early gender determination is a neat new thing humans figured out how to do.

Thank you for trying to keep the topic lighthearted, Abbeysmom, even when this thread started to get nudged into a painful subject matter area for you.

I didn't understand the "woman-hating" Tel Aviv reference. What was that in reference to?

GIANT I don't wish your decision on any parent, and I cannot even begin to understand what you went through emotionally or physically.

    Thinking of you!

I recently read an article about India banning gender ultrasounds because sex-selective abortions are so wide-spread... It's tragic, but I do think if someone is going to terminate based on gender, it's probably better done at 16 days than 16 weeks.

I agree. And also, not everyone can be a good parent to a child with serious disabilities. I personally wow parents who do it. But when I think about myself, I don't know if I could be ever as strong and determined to deal with the situation. And please, don't judge - we are all different. I however HOPE that this test is something that is taken further to determine the actual disability, not just the gender. Even with strong possibility of having a child carrying the gene, it may not happen and atm there are not clear tests that can determine the bad genetic diseases till later in pregnancy (sometimes MUCH later).

On the other hand, there is a good reason why in China it is a crime to tell the parents the gender of a child - you won't believe how gender prejudice some people are, and it is not only because of one child policy. A friend of a friend gave birth to 2 daughters in a row. Her husband is very rich. He told her if she give him the next one of a male gender, he will pay her a handsome amount of money. As if it depends on her. Sad, isn't it?
