Husbands taking off work

I work at a school and our asst principal sent an email saying he would be out for the rest of the week bc his wife is having their baby. I announced it during our break period and one of the teachers went nuts! She was like I can't believe he thinks it's ok to take a week off for something like that! If she can't take care of the baby herself, she shouldn't be having more kids! Doesn't she have parents to help her? He has a responsibility to this school to be here!
I was so taken aback! I'm still in shock! I said doesn't he have a responsibility to his family before the school? She looked at me like I had three heads. Not to mention these people have 3 young boys and this is their 4th child!'
Am I crazy for expecting my husband to be an active participant in our child's first week of life or what?

Your coworker is crazy. First, the principal obviously has accrued time off that he can use in any way that he desires (as long as it was approved by his boss). Second, his wife will be going through something crazy and will need his support during and after the birth. In fact, the government says that he would qualify for up to 12 weeks of time off if he so desired.

I agree! I wish dh had the time to take off to be with me instead all his boss can give him is the 3 days we will most likely be in the hospital again unless he still has sick days available by then.

Does this person have children??? Unfortunately some people have nothing more important than work, or themselves to think about. Do they know you're pg???

Whoops...has kids of her own and her husband only took 1 day off when she had them!
She doesn't know I'm pg and I'm a little apprehensive to share now lol

Well, apparently she has issues with her DH only taking one day off then. Just because he couldn't/wouldn't doesn't mean that this man shouldn't when he can.

Wow, that is ridiculous that she would get so upset when any father should want and need to be there for his family! My DH took off a week and a half after DS was born, and he asked me if it was ok before he went back to work.
