10 weeks pregnant had my first doc appt yesterday, so happy to say we are having twins, such a blessing!!
I finally understand why i have been abnormally tired and extra hormonal!
I had my first ultrasound yesterday and my doc didn't tell me if they were identical or fraternal, :hugs: is it too soon to tell, how can we tell?
The first and easiest is 2 sacs vs. 1 sac and 2 placentas vs 1 placenta. I can not remember how soon I found out mine were fraternal. Only one sac would confirm identical; extremely rare cases of 1 placenta have occured with fraternal twins.
If they are identical and the egg splits before 5 days after conception then they can have two sacs and two placentas. However, in fraternal twins the placentas meet and cause sort of a peak or mountain and they will have 4 membranes between the placentas. If identical they are smooth where they meet and have 2 membranes between them. Our Perinatologist is fairly sure ours are fraternal due to the above information, however if they are born and look very similar then you can have a DNA test to confirm identical or fraternal.
Also if you are over 30 they are more likely fraternal and under 30 more likely identical.
