How did you do it? We do the whole Santa thing, but would also like to remember what Christmas is about as well, and are in need of some advice. I don't really know how to introduce it. Any insight?

We talk about it a lot, read children's books about Jesus' birth, and have a play nativity set. One of our books is called Christmas Angels, which I got from the Dayspring website, and I can't remember the titles of the other ones we have.
DD1 is 3, and she is still trying to put it all together. Yesterday we were talking about Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, and she said, "Mary... remember, she had a little lamb?"
Mostly just by talking and reading about it. I think we've told Kaelyn 100 times that Christmas is Jesus' birthday, so she's getting that part.
We just got a play nativity set. DD is 2 and she loves it! It is very fun to play with her with it, introduce her to the story and tell her who each person is. I would like to get a good children's book that is on her level.
Obviously she is not going to understand very much of it right now, but its fun to start introducing it. :)
Last year, we read books about it, but he did not really understand. He really would not sit to listen. This year, he tells us that it is Jesus's birthday that we celebrate. He can sometimes identify Mary, Joseph, and the angel. This reminds me to go look for his Christmas books. We have just been talking about it. I should get a play nativity set!
DD's God parents get her a piece of a nativity set every year and so that is part of the conversation (baby Jesus has been all over the house for two Christmas seasons now)- We also have a couple preschool/picture book bibles that are about the house. They just get thrown in with normal reading time- so its easy.
Editing to add: The nativity set is not a play set- but seems unbreakable. By the time she leaves for college, she'll have an extensive pretty set to take with her.
Dh and I are going to do this for DS as well.
Like others said, we just talk about it. She has a board book about the Nativity and we talk about baby Jesus and his birthday coming up. Whenever I spot a picture of Jesus (adult or infant) I'll show her and tell her who it is.
