Wearing religious jewelry

Would you wear a cross? Star of David?

That Liberal Moms group on Facebook posted an article about Sarah Palin wearing a Star of David. Everyone knows she's not Jewish. I think it's rather rude for her to try that, but maybe my intense dislike of her is clouding my judgement.

Someone else posted that they'd never wear a cross as they're not Christian, even though she does like the jewelry. I feel the same way. I'd never wear a cross myself, even though I was raised Christian, I'm not now. The thought never crossed my mind to wear the Star of David for any reason. Ever.

So, as much as I dislike Sarah, the post isn't really about her but whether you'd wear religious jewelry under any circumstances. Why or why not?

I saw that on TV and thought it was very odd and didn't like it at all. The cross on her fine, but now the star.
I would not and do not wear either.

No way. Butttt we do have a blanket with a star of david on it. We got from out jewish family members. :laugh:

My cynical side suspects she's trying to ride the coattails of the backlash against Obama, following his recent stance on Israel and the 1967 lines.

About the wearing of religious jewelry, I said "other" because I generally don't wear religious symbols. I would feel as though I were co-opting something meaningful to someone else. I feel similarly about people who wear t-shirts with Chinese characters who can't actually read them. It seems to me like a bastage-ization (this site bleeped out what I originally wrote there ;) ) of their original meanings and thus somewhat rude, using something that might be of deep significance to one person and treating it like it's just decoration.

My exception to this is the fact that I've but Bodhi in an "Om" onesie, which means a lot to both Hindus and Buddhists. I also have a number of Buddhas in my home. Although I am not a practicing Buddhist, I strongly agree with everything I've read coming from its teachers. I also, for example, have a yoga mat with a lotus flower on it. Sometimes it makes me feel cheesy for having these items without fully subscribing to the religion they come from.

Also along similar lines, I named my son Bodhi, a Sanskrit word which has a lot of meaning to Buddhists. The truth is, however, that we named him after the Bodhi character in "Point Break" - not Swayze in the movie, but after the hilarious one in the live stage comedy version "Point Break: Live", which we saw while I was pregnant. I have to admit, though, that it still makes me feel self conscious to share his name with both people of Indian origin and practicing Buddhists. However, every Buddhist I've met has been very happy to know I named my son after a word that means enlightened or is shorthand for someone on the path to enlightenment.

For what it's worth, I think everything you do is 'acceptable' because you do subscribe to many of their beliefs. How many people call themselves Christians, and fully believe they are, yet aren't active in any church?

I just can't do it. I have a lovely tiny turquoise and silver cross that was the "something blue" for my wedding. My sister made up the bundle and it was the cross sewn to a handkerchief of my grandmother's. I love the cross and actually had it put on a tiny seed pearl chain but I have only worn it once and was uncomfortably aware of it the whole time.

I voted no way but...I guess that's not true because Jimi (who is Pagan) has bought me pentagrams before as a symbol of protection and I have worn those.

However, a cross? A star of David? Not happening. :laugh:

I've worn pentagrams before too. DH was practicing Wicca when I met him and he gave me his pentagram pendant a while after we started dating. I don't have a problem wearing jewelry that symbolizes a religion I identify with even if I don't practice it, but I wouldn't take it lightly or just wear it because I like the symbol.
I really like the chalice, which is the UU symbol, but I don't have any chalice jewelry.

I voted No, but I do have a ring with a cross on it that my mom gave me and I will wear it on occassion when I go out with her mostly :winks:

I just recently wore a necklace with a St. Christopher pendant on it while we travelled. DH's mother bought them for all of us for safe travels, so it meant something for her that we all wore them. That's the only thing I've ever worn like that but I wouldn't wear it every day or wear a cross or anything like that, though.

yeah, I probably would as a respect thing. Not a star of David. I would wear a cross if it made my mom feel more comfortable. It's just a respect thing for me... especially if the person that wants me to wear it will feel better for whatever reason.

I don't see it as anything but a shape. I don't read into it, and couldn't care less if someone thought I was catholic/christian, because I know I am not.

I would and do. I have a Celtic cross I got in Ireland. I rarely wear it, but it's beautiful. I also have a Star of David and I'm on the search for a nice Hamsa (my grandma wears one all the time, she won't give me hers, though :laugh: ). Part of it is that I like the design- they're either pretty or unique and I just like it. I'm not totally opposed to any religion. For all I know, they might be right. I don't know. There are aspects of many religions that I agree with and I suppose it's a sort of nod to that.

As for Palin, I feel like she's just trying to get people on her side. "Oh look, she supports Judaism!" "Oh look! She's a good Christian!" It's political BS. Next we'll be seeing her in a burqa.
