Post IVF

Hi Ladies,
Rachel, I feel your sleeping discomfort! I am a back sleeper so I have been trying to train myself. And yes, I wake up also with a numb hand or sore shoulder, ugh! Plus the bathroom trips...

Michelle, I was on progesterone shots til 11 weeks (dr actually said I could stop at 10 weeks but I was nervous and they said it doesn't hurt to take it). The placenta takes over at 10 weeks. The estrogen they started weaning me off at about 9 weeks, then prometrium about 10 weeks started weaning me off. So by 12 weeks I was off all the hormones. It was a relief to stop taking everything, but a little scary!

Went to my ob/gyn today and all is fine. I don't go back for 4 weeks, which is weird because I was so used to going 3x a week before! Next week is my appt. with the high risk doctor, just because of my age and dh's age.

Hi Rachel. Thanks for the info. I got the doctor to give me the progesterone until week 12. She says I don't really need it, but she knows it will make me feel better. So I'm on endometrium. My DHh will be relieved he can stop giving me the shots. The baby was moving and waving again which was so nice to see. HB was strong (she didn't measure it) and the baby measured 9 weeks 4 days, which she says is in the normal range and is totally fine. I hope it is - I'm so used to the baby measuring ahead at each scan. I have my NT screening on 12/17 and my next OB appointment is 12/30. I'm getting some bloodwork done next week and I got a flu shot. Everything seems to be going well!!!

Thanks for letting me know, Sylvia. I will feel better about being off the progesterone once I'm in the 2nd trimester. My RE said I could stop this week, but it made me nervous, so since it's not harming anything, she's keeping me on it.

Congrats on your OB appointment today! I know, it's weird not to go back for 4 weeks - I'm not going back for 4 weeks, either. Are you doing screening at the high risK doctor? My screening appt. is in 2 weeks with a peri also because of me age. Good luck with that appointment and let us know how it goes!

Michele- I had nausea pretty bad with heartburn & reflux from about 9w to 13w. I never threw up, just the reflux. No more nausea, but I still get HB and reflux occasionally.

Congrats on being 26 weeks today:hooray:!! I'm 18 weeks today, so I am also celebrating (I celebrate every Thursday for another week down):winks:. Snow sounds way too cold for me still. We had weather in the 70's all of last week and it dropped since the weekend to the 60's, but today only got to like 55 or so. Tonight it will get down to 29...I am so ready to get under my comforter and snooze as if I were a hibernating bear! I'm off tomorrow and after I take DD to school, I might just come back home and go back to bed! Like you I deal with the lower back pain in the evenings when I sit on the couch and get up & down. Also, when I go t bed I am very sore and achy. I toss & turn much of the night and always get up once (sometimes twice) to pee. :indifferent:

Oh, and though I didn't feel well on Monday, I put on a smiley face and enjoyed the evening with DH and DD and celebrated his 44th. I love my family!!

OMG, I'm a back sleeper too and I have to put a pillow behind me when I lay on my left side to try to keep myself from rolling onto my back. My arms and shoulders constantly fall asleep and I get pissed and move the pillow from behind me, go to the bathroom and lay on my back until I start getting real sleepy again and usually force myself to lay back on my side. It sucks!:ohno:

Yay for a good appt today:cabbage:. I've been going monthly since my 9w appt and though me and DH are both 44 they don't have me down as high risk. I think it's because I used donor eggs. However, I always thought the AMA also affects chances of gestational diabetes and other complications which is also why they keep a closer eye. I think with my next pregnancy I am going to switch OB practices because I feel like I should be high risk for so many reasons and I'm not getting that attention. I'll put more detail in a separate post.

Glad your OB let you stay on the PIO shots so you could feel better and more secure. I went off at about 10w and I was happy to, but it did make me somewhat nervous. Glad you got to see baby today and all is going well.:wub:

Mine tapered off significantly around 12-13 weeks. I threw up for the 1st and only time at 17 wks... weird! :dunno: I still feel nauseous occasionally in the morning if I'm hungry, but that's about it. I hope your nausea stops soon!

So, my results came back from last weeks tests and I had a message on Monday from the OB nurse. I was told the week prior that I would ONLY GET A CALL IF IT WAS NOT NORMAL. Not sure why she would call my home number with this type of call knowing I'm at work during the day, so I had to wait until Tuesday to call back and get the news, and it was not good news. I wasn't given any details, but of course I hadn't prepared myself for abnormal results and what to ask about. The OB nurse simply said that my test results were abnormal with my demographics and when rerun with the donors demographics (her age) it was still abnormal. So she said OB said to refer me to genetics specialist for genetics counseling. Then she asked if we would consider an amnio. I told her just to schedule the genetics counseling and we would figure out from there where to go.

I researched the Quad Screening in detail on line and found there is a 5-8% false positive on this test and so I contacted my RE who confirmed my donor was screened for genetics and confirmed that she has two young healthy children and those were normal pregnancies and I should wait until my anatomy scan before worrying about further testing or genetic counseling. So, that is what we will do. We will just see how the scan goes and if no concerns about the LO from that detailed scan we will not do any further diagnostic testing.

I usually never wake up in the night, but I have to switch sides throughout the night or else my hip hurts so bad I can barely walk in the morning. I'm usually a side sleeper, so I didn't have to change anything, but I guess it is the extra weight in my middle that is making my hip hurt?

Someone at work today was talking about being really careful not to sleep on your back because your blood pressure can drop very low. Anybody know how this affects the baby? I don't like being uncomfortable, but I definitely don't want to inadvertently do something to hurt the baby. In the mornings a lot of the time I find myself lying on my back, most of the way asleep, as I hit snooze a few times... my doctor didn't seem to think it was a problem but I don't know... any advice???

Did she say what the abnormal result could mean? We didn't do any of those screenings because of the risk of false positives, so I don't know too much about interpreting the results. When is your anatomy scan? If you are 18 weeks now it is probably coming up soon!! I hope everything is ok for you and your LO!!! :hugs:

Hooray for another great u/s! Don't you love seeing the LO squirming around?! :wub: Your NT scan will be here before you know it and then you get a nice long look at the LO. And hopefully some good pics, too!

I know what you mean about the wait between appointments..they are killing me. I'm lucky that now that the LO is kicking it's reassuring, but before the kicking started it was torture..I think soon I might move into the every 2 week category (in January, maybe?), which will be much better..For some reason I always feel so much better after my OB visits, even though they are short and my OB isn't the warmest person. But hearing the HB is priceless!

Also, they say the placenta takes over around 9-10 weeks, which is why a lot of people go off progesterone then, BUT I think the reason they kept me on for 12 weeks was just to be super safe, since it doesn't hurt..after 5 attempts at IVF they didn't want to risk anything, and I would have felt really worried if I went off it any earlier. Even 12 weeks I was tempted to keep taking it..

Rhonda - Your "next" pregnancy? I love the way you are thinking!! My DH is all happy for this one to be our one and only, where I keep talking about trying for another one after this.. It must be my pregnancy hormones, because originally when we met he wanted a house full of kids and I only agreed to one!! He doesn't want to go through the IVF struggle again, though, which I understand, but if it 'just happens' then he will be happy with more.

:hugs: The problem with these tests are they aren't 100% accurate. Same with if you had NT scan and they give you good odds..they are just percentages and odds and no one will really know until you give birth (or have something more invasive done). I hope that your anatomy scan brings better insight so you don't have to go through with an amnio (although from what I understand they are quite safe). What does genetics counseling entail? Is that just counseling, or is that testing?

Thanks! According to my "what to expect" book, one should try to sleep on their side (preferably left) because sleeping on your back can causes the belly weight to rest on your back, intestines and major blood vessels, which can "aggravate backaches and haemorrhoids, make digestion less efficient, interfere with optimal circulation and possibly cause hypotension or low blood pressure, which can make you dizzy". Sounds scary, but at the same time, my OB and yoga teacher both say that if you are comfortable, go with it. So, who knows?!? I will keep trying to stay on my side, but I think it will be a miracle if I ever make it the entire night without ending up on my back!

Thanks, Katie! Sorry you're still nauseous...that's never fun, but glad it's not all the time. Luckily, it all seems to have tapered off. I get nauseous once in a while now, but not all day or every time I eat like I used to. She said it was normal that it just stopped and it might or might not come back.

I'm sorry she left you that information in a message - that is not acceptable. She should have tried your cell as well, especially considering that you'd probably have questions. When is your anatomy scan? I'm glad your RE told you to wait on other genetic testing and counseling until you have that. I know genetic testing is important, but it is not exact and it can cause unnecessary worry. Praying for you and your LO. Hang in there Rhonda.:hugs:

It IS wonderful seeing that little baby move. I'll be sad not getting scans every week, but it also means I'm moving into the phase where I don't need them. And yes, that HB is amazing every time I hear it!! The NT scan kind of scares me a bit...I hope it goes well. My Ob said she wanted me to feel comfortable and it couldn't hurt to keep me on the progesterone until week 12 and it is such a stress reliever.

Congrats on heading into bi-weekly visits. That will be fun to check on the baby that often and means you in the home stretch. Sorry your still having trouble finding a comfortable sleeping position. I guess you're just preparing for the lack of sleep when your little girl arrives.:hugs:

My research found the risk of false positives on the quad screening is only 5-8%. The risk of false negatives however is much higher like 40-60%. Since I had a positive, I am of course looking for a false positive in my case and we are praying that is what is determined in the end.

We have an appt with a genetics counselor on Tuesday (got the call today) and I decided to keep the appt instead of cancelling. I am hoping the specialty clinic which also is a high risk clinic can sit down and review the actual results and explain them. The most common place for error is in the gestational age and we all know that is more common with natural pregnancies than medically assisted ones. I am wondering if my IVIG infusion meds could have caused my numbers in the blood work to be out of whack and that could explain everything.

Michelle- The nurse calle my house and said she needed to discuss the results. She didn't leave info that the results were abnormal, but they had already told us they only call if the tests are abnormal. I was pissed that she didn't call my cell so I could talk to someone instead of worrying all night long.

Rachael- I don't know exactly what is entailed in the visit with the genetics counselor, but I am hoping for an U/S that day. One of the other cheerleader moms is an OB nurse and she said all docs send their patients to this clinic when they get abnormal screening results and the clinic will do an ultrasound and further testing. I'm counting on it. I am going to have long weekend worrying about these stupid test results.

*sigh* I'm sorry. I suck at keeping up with everyone these days! I still love you all though :D

Michele~ I stopped taking my Progesterone suppositories at 10 weeks. I hated that feeling like I was doing it all on my own now! I liked the security of it....even if it was gross and messy. Heck,if they had let me I'd probably still be shooting up to this very day!

Katie~ That sleeping thing stressed me out too! I used to lose so much sleep worrying and checking myself in the night. I've been sleeping propped up and occasionally laying on my side. If I lay on my side too long my back just kills me! If you put a pillow between your knees when you lay on your side that might help you with your hip pain. I've come to the realization(after so much sleeplessness) that your body is going to do what it's going to do. If we absolutely weren't to lay on our back at all(acidentally) that when we got pregnant we would also grow so hump or something on our back to keep us from doing such:laugh: Hope you can get some relief soon though!

AFM~ My husband surprised me on black Friday by having the cribs put together by the time I got home. He's the least handy person I know so it took him a while. I'm so proud of him! It's kind of making all of this a little more real. Actually I think I'm starting to go into a panic before the real panic sets in. A friend of mind had a little boy last week. I think that will ease my nerves too. I start to worry about every little thing between visits so it should relieve some of that stress!

One of the other cheerleader moms is an OB nurse and she said all docs send their patients to this clinic when they get abnormal screening results and the clinic will do an ultrasound and further testing. I'm counting on it. I am going to have long weekend worrying about these stupid test results.

Michele~ I stopped taking my Progesterone suppositories at 10 weeks. I hated that feeling like I was doing it all on my own now! I liked the security of it....even if it was gross and messy. Heck,if they had let me I'd probably still be shooting up to this very day!

Katie~ That sleeping thing stressed me out too! I used to lose so much sleep worrying and checking myself in the night. I've been sleeping propped up and occasionally laying on my side. If I lay on my side too long my back just kills me! If you put a pillow between your knees when you lay on your side that might help you with your hip pain. I've come to the realization(after so much sleeplessness) that your body is going to do what it's going to do. If we absolutely weren't to lay on our back at all(acidentally) that when we got pregnant we would also grow so hump or something on our back to keep us from doing such:laugh: Hope you can get some relief soon though!

AFM~ My husband surprised me on black Friday by having the cribs put together by the time I got home. He's the least handy person I know so it took him a while. I'm so proud of him! It's kind of making all of this a little more real. Actually I think I'm starting to go into a panic before the real panic sets in. A friend of mind had a little boy last week. So I'm not caught up on all the posts and I apologize. We moved the Monday prior to Thanksgiving and didn't get internet until this Friday. I posted in April dd that I have been having contractions daily. . .ones w/cramping and pressure. . the dr checked me on TH and my cervix was closed, long, and high so that was a relief. I'm just praying nothing crazy happens. I have to keep a close eye on the number of contractions I have each hr but wasn't given any restrictions.

So with that, I'm just going about my business and still unpacking. Want to get the house in order a.s.a.p and the nursery. Lucky for me my ds is 3 and I saved all his boy stuff so. . I'm really only in need of diapers and wipes. We just ordered ds a full size bed and chest and the baby will be getting the convertible crib, etc.

My cousin is coming on Monday for all next week to help me go through all the baby stuff and organize and we are going to do some personalized touches for the nursery like nursery rhymes and scriptures on canvas. We may recover the bumper w/different fabric and she can make a new bed skirt IF I find fabric I like better than what DS had.

The baby is so active and i love it but yesterday and today man the way he is running (what I believe could be his feet) so hard on my tummy, I've actually jumped b/c it hurt so bad. I don't remember it being painful w/DS. This one has a frisky streak.

Pls keep us in your prayers for a full term baby this time. I will be having a vbac if labor comes prior to 38 weeks and a scheduled C after that.

Wow, you are growing lady! That is probably typical though when you carry twins:winks:. I think most twin pregnancies get to weekly appts in the 2nd trimester and rather quickly. I would want that if I were carrying twins. Sounds like you are doing great and so glad DH surprised you and put up the cribs!!:wub:

Thanks Michele:hugs:. When I have IVIG the medicine they use is GAMMAGARD which is made from human plasma and is used for the treatment of primary immunodeficiency disorders. In my case, I had positive antiphospholipids and the treatment is supposed to improve those abnormalities and the immunodeficiency. Whether or not it can affect any of the markers tested in the quad screening like AFP and hCG. Some of the reasons the AFP may be high and give a false positive for neural tube defects is if the pregnancy is further along than expected or a twin or triplet pregnancy. Other less frequent causes for high AFP is poor fetal growth or preterm labor. So, they may recommend a repeat screening and/or do an ultrasound to check the growth of the fetus and confirm the due date as well as check for multiples. If everything is normal with the U/S and repeat screening is still positive, they would recommend an amniocentesis. If however, there were several markers out of range, the screening would be positive for Downs Syndrome and they would do an ultrasound and/or amniocenteses, but ultrasounds alone cannot diagnose downs, only the amnio. I am hoping it is just the AFP that was high and none of the other markers like hCG were low. I will find out on Tuesday. Thanks for all of your comforting comments ladies:wub:.

Sounds like your baby is gonna be a track star! Sorry for all the beatings you are taking:eyeroll:. Yes, I'm in Columbia! I've spent most of my adult life here in SC after my parents retired here when I was in Middle school. I'm shocked about all the contractions so early on. I sure hope they stop on their own. Michelle, sounds like you are getting along quite well! It is amazing how the nauseousness just seems to stop. Hopefully it doesn't come back! I miss the weekly scans. It is so reassuring to see the L/O every week moving around. I bought a doppler so I could hear the h/b when I need reassurance that there is a baby there! You can't really hear it early on, but at about 14/15 weeks it is easier.

Rhonda, I have an appointment on Tues. also. With the fetal medicine group for high risk. At that point we go over the different tests and options. Since me and dh are of advanced age we are at higher risk. It is a bit nerve racking as they throw all this at you. And the test don't specifically state anything, just give an assessment of risk. Good luck with your appointment.

Last week we went to the genetic counselor. My husband has kidney/bladder issues. When they have done my u/s they always see something enlarged on at least one of both babies kidneys. So Wednesday I'm going to have an in depth u/s at the Specialist to make sure everything is OK. Why must we deal with such things after having to go through what we do to get here in the first place?

I can't wait until I can start feeling the baby move. I think I'll find that very reassuring. I know what you mean about worrying about the high risks and genetic issues. I have to schedule some tests and head in for my NT scan on 12/15. It is just another thing for me to worry about. And with all the testing not being definite, it seems almost cruel, you know...I wish I culd relax more. I'm doing much better than I was the first few weeks and I am getting the chance to enjoy my pregnancy. But you know how it is after trying for so long...

Speaking of testing, my ladies over 35 - did you have the following tests done after you were pregnant:cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, fragile x. This is in addition to all the testing we've previously done before the IVF.

Wow, Sarah, kudos to your DH, and for you for having cribs already. I ordered a car seat and a stroller, and that's it. No clothes, no bed, nothing.. I wanted to wait as long as possible (superstitious is my middle name) but now I'm starting to think I need to get cracking by at least making a list of what I will need.. I'm glad you are getting such great care for your babies, especially with the BH and the kidney testing.. Wishing you the best for your results on Wed. :hugs:

Melissa, you look so darn cute in those pictures!! Love the bump!! You are another super organized mom-to-be (again).. I have to get on it or I'll be the only one with a baby and nothing to dress her in!

My LO is really active, too, and last night kept me up in the middle of the night for hours doing aerobics or who knows what. It was non-stop followed by a big leap onto my bladder that sent me running to the bathroom. That was the first bladder kick I've gotten, and it wasn't fun AT ALL. I'm just glad she's active, though. :wub:

I haven't had any of this testing, but we also don't have any health risks in either of our families. My age is the biggest risk factor, I believe. I did the NT scan which came back with really good odds, and my 20 week u/s was all looking good, so we are just holding on to that and hoping for the best. I get another detailed scan at 32 weeks to also check that things are how they should be. I wouldn't do (and the DR recommended against) any invasive tests unless the previous results were different. Since things seem to be normal, I'm going to just wait it out til birth.

AFM - As I mentioned above, this LO is a wild child.. The kicking has definitely jumped up a level this week, which I love, but is also waking me up at night. I'm starting to freak out that we're getting so close, even though I really want to meet her. :wub:

Thanks, Ladies. I spend a very frustrating morning on the phone with my insurance company and found out that they will not let me know if they cover the genetic testing until after they receive the bill from the lab. Since the tests total over $1000, I'm not interested in spending that money after the 15K we spent on getting pregnant for some inconclusive results that will stress me out. If we had any of these diseases running in my family or DH's family, I'd do it, but we don't and we had a complete clear genetic screening 2 years ago, which I'm assuming still applies to this date. The biggest factor is our age (I'm 38 and DH is 39) I'll speak with DH tonight, but I have a feeling he'll feel the same way. We're doing the NT screening on the 17th and hopefully that will suffice. I'm not planning on any invasive screening procedures since we would worry about the baby's well-being and we don't want to put that at risk. Gosh there is so much to think/worry about. If I had the extra money, I totally would, but with property taxes and personal taxes due this month and in January, I'd rather keep that money for an emergency if needed. Grrr...I need a nap after all this.:indifferent:

If we had any of these diseases running in my family or DH's family, I'd do it, but we don't and we had a complete clear genetic screening 2 years ago, which I'm assuming still applies to this date. The biggest factor is our age (I'm 38 and DH is 39) I'll speak with DH tonight, but I have a feeling he'll feel the same way. We're doing the NT screening on the 17th and hopefully that will suffice. I'm not planning on any invasive screening procedures since we would worry about the baby's well-being and we don't want to put that at risk. Gosh there is so much to think/worry about. If I had the extra money, I totally would, but with property taxes and personal taxes due this month and in January, I'd rather keep that money for an emergency if needed. Grrr...I need a nap after all this.:indifferent:

Ugh, I feel for you. That is so frustrating! Your NT scan is pretty much just a week away and it should be a good indicator, if you decide not to go for the extra expensive testing.

Last night I looked up genetic testing in one of my pg books and it said if you are caucasian you should get tested for cystic fibrosis. How have I never heard of that?! Neither my RE or OB have mentioned that, but I have an OB appt tomorrow and I will ask. If I really need it I will do it, but sometimes I wonder how necessary some of these things are. :headscratch:

Rachel~ I totally know what you mean about being superstitious! I fight it all the time. I keep plugging along but in the back of my head I think what if something happens to one of them and when I come home I have two of all this stuff....:(

Michele~ Insurance is ridiculous sometimes. I agree with Rachel. Wait till you have your NT scan and go from there. Your clinic must have done some testing before too. So maybe you can find out about that?:hugs:

Michelle, if you had genetic screening done 2 years ago that should be fine. I would think genes don't change.

We did genetic testing prior to IVF, and found that dh is a carrier for cystic fibrosis. I wasn't though, and if I had been there is a 1 in 4 chance for the baby to have it. I was lucky health ins. covered most of the test cost.

We did the NT scan, then we will do the 17 week screen. The NT scan came back negative (or low risk) so I am leaning towards no invasive tests also.

Try to relax and not stress about these tests!

Don't think like that!!!! My DH gets on my case whenever I talk like that..so far we are doing great, right? And things that are going well, usually stay going well. I need to get out and do some shopping. I went to the Baby Gap today while I was out and *almost* bought some things, but then I was overwhelmed with too many cute things and since I was bundled up for outside weather I started burning up and had to get out of there.. I need to try online shopping!

Anyone having trouble painting their toes? I have been indulging in pedicures every few weeks, but since we've had such bad weather I didn't want to venture out in the snow and ice in flip flops. My toes were in need of some color (and I have yoga tonight and can't have icky toes in public!!), so I just painted them myself. OMG that was hard!!!! I feel like I squished the baby! I managed somehow, but I think that will be the last time!! :)

Thanks, Rachel. I believe we've been tested for cystic fibrosis before, but I need to check out medical records. Luckily I have a copy form our previous clinic. I might get that one, then, and not the other two. I agree with wondering about the necessity of some of these tests. Let us know how your appointment goes today. Oh and sorry that painting your toes was such an uncomfortable experience! At least you'll have pretty toes for yoga.

Thanks, Sylvia. We'll also discuss all this with the peri and see what he says. We are both inclined not to do any invasive testing - my DH is pretty adamant about that. AlI can do is wait and try not to worry.

I totally agree with Rachel. It is so hard not to go down that "what if..." path, but it is a dangerous thing and isn't helpful at all. Things are going well for your LOs and that shouldn't change this far in. I know it's easy for us to tell you that, but believe me, I think we are all having to deal with this in some form or another.:hugs: Hang in there:hugs:
