Just saw off dbf' s son. Everything was so great outside of one major black cloud and that is him getting drunk. I mean, I know he his young but as I told him this morning as we said goodbye, he will need to learn there is a time and place for that type of behavior and that under my roof with my children is absolutely not one of those times or places. I don' t even think he remembers last night. I had to step in as he was arguing with Savana about putting lotion under her nose where she had chapped skin. She is funny about lotions and creams ans I usually apply them while she sleeps if she needs it. She knows I do this and will even ask me to sometimes. I told him nicely twice to leave her alone that it' s her choice. He then turned to her and said he was going to do it forcefully if she didn't' t do it herself. I saw red. That was so out of character for him and I have to say that when I witness people stepping so far out of character like that, it makes me very wary of whether or not they are being a genuine person the rest of the time. Anyway, I told him he most certainly would not and if he ever touched her without her permission, he would have me to contend with. He quickly apologized but by this time Savana was already very upset and even more so having to see me get assertive with him. It sucked and the next time he visits there will be rules regarding drinking.
Bridget, that sounds so awful.
Hey, I meant to tell you in that other thread that I almost partially ate a slug when I was about 5. I almost stepped on it and my mom pointed that out, so I picked it up and apologized, and then I decided to kiss it, and in kissing it I sucked it partway into my mouth and decided to keep going. It was not a little slug, either.
I'm realizing this does not make me sound as cool as everyone else did.
LOL L. You would have had me and my friends beat!!! I had a friend who was a bug eater and he would not eat slugs. We even tried to get him to by putting salt on it. That is when we found out they died from having salt on them. You would have been VERY popular amongst me and my gross friends lol.
To bad about the not so great end to your DSS visit. I hope he gets his act together and that he was genuinely apologetic for what occurred.
Jen, hope you are feeling better again today.
Chrissy, I also know nothing of jewelry making. It looks fun but I don't have the patience for it yet I don't think. Or the time. And congrats to Jesi on joining the guard!!
Erin
:( Oh Bridget, that sounds horrible. He must have been drinking then, when he got on Savana like that? I always marval at people that think they can talk like that to a child, but most especially to someone else's child. Yuck.
L, I gagged reading your slug story. I missed all the others you were referring to, so you're the top 'gross' member in our corner of the world. At least as far as I'm concerned. :D My aunt had a gypsy moth smack her left mirror on her car while she was driving along with the window down, smiling and singing, and the majority of it flew right into her mouth. She pulled the car over and threw up in the ditch.
Erin, I don't normally have patience for artsy-craftsy stuff either but I have to do something. I'm making myself nuts stressing about things and one of the top bits of advice people tell you is to 'get a hobby' so...I'm gonna try this. I give it 10 minutes. Actually my motivation is two-fold. They had a craft fair at work and one of my coworkers was selling some gorgeous jewelry she'd made, but of course it was too pricey for me. Gumball machine jewelry is too pricey for me right now. :P I started thinking about it and how it's probably lots cheaper to make...and how hard can it be? I guess I'm gonna find out because I did find a site and ordered a tool kit and materials to make two necklaces. It was a bit expensive for this order, but that's because I had to get the tools.
Does anyone else think Swarovski beads are 'old lady' jewelry? I don't think so, but maybe I'm old. This is what Jesi told me. The brat! lol
Oh, this is the first one I wanna make http://www.artbeads.com/dew-drops-bridal-necklace.html I know it says bridal, but I'd wear it with a plain top. I love green and I'm really into the teardrops.
That doesn't look anything like bridal jewelry to me. I think you can wear it with anything that is not very adorned.
We went to the motorcycle show yesterday. Had a great time. DD rode around and round and round on some balance bikes. My cousin and DH had come down for it as well, and we went out for Burmese food after. Because mom is here, I even got to sleep in, which was awesome. Just having a lazy, stay at home day today.
Yes, Chrissy, he was drunk during that exchange with S. Very upsetting. Dbf says he threw up in the van on the way to the airport this morning and blamed on "forgetting to take his meds". Right. I have to wonder how he is at home. He lives with his grandparents.
Suja, that sounds lovely. The sleeping in and the motorcycle show.
Chrissy, I don't know much about making jewelry either but I do like to wear handmade beaded jewelry and just bought 2 lovely necklaces of an old highschool friend via facebook. She buys old jewelry from estate sales, takes them apart and makes new things. One of the necklaces I bought is three different colored beads in a sort of copper wire nest. I told the kids it was them, my three little eggs in my nest. They loved that I said that and Sawyer promptly yanked the chain, busting it completely. Lol. Savana cried. Luckily the woman I bought it from says it's an easy fix so I'll be shipping it back for repair.
Ugh-I typed a reply & lost internet and it's gone! Boo.
Suja, enjoy your lazy day. It's well deserved. I'm being lazy but shouldn't be. I need to get out to my dad's. :P I was gonna go shopping for an outfit for my interview on Thursday but decided against it. I hate shopping. And I just don't wanna do it. I'll just wear my black pinstripe slacks and white button down blouse.
That's really sad about dbf's son Bridget :( I hate how alcohol can totally change a person. That's exactly what happens with Rich. He IS a great guy. Until he drinks. And unfortunately, he drinks 3-4 times a week. Maybe more. It still happens too. I think we're getting along good and then he'll be really short and curt with me, and snippy. Every.single.time it's because he's been drinking. Now, though, he doesn't even try to apologize. He insists what he said when he was drinking was valid and that I'm the arse.
That necklace sounds adorable. I've already been mentally thinking about making my own mother's necklace using the kids birthstones. Not sure yet what it will look like. For her, it probably is an easy fix. I know building them doesn't look too complicated (or else I wouldn't even attempt it!), but with skills and practice I'm sure fixing broken ones becomes an easy task. I didn't even think about that aspect of it.
whew we are back from our trip up to SC. Our Christmas was hectic, we had nine people at our house. Lots of cleaning and getting the house ready for them. We had 2 friends staying at our place, the rest stayed a rental home. Thank goodness for that! We met my MIL's new bf "J", he is very nice. And the two of them seem happy together. I am glad she has someone, she seems a bit more relaxed now. No screeching this time. Well except for....one night we stayed in a hotel in Charleston, we all had our own rooms, and G was being his usual 4 year old self, talking and jumping around. Dh was trying to help J with his new tablet, and MIL was losing patience with G. She yelled at G, "Gilly will you be quiet, you are driving me crazy!!" That is when we left for our own room. He was just being a little boy. That is when I really cannot stand the woman. So glad she lives thousands of miles away.
The road trip up there is so long, on a good day it's 12 hours, but can be as long as 13-14 hours. And I can't just sit back and read, I have to cater to dh & ds whim. More snacks, more books, check the GPS, check the maps, more water, change my movie etc. I always need a vacation after the trip lol.
Gilly got a haircut yesterday, with his curls gone he looks so much older. He told me he is going to tell everyone new he meets that is five years old, they won't know he really is four. Okay, bud.
Ashley, good luck on your interview!
Bridget, that is terrible that his visit had to end on a sour note.
IS/IT people....question for you. If someone was going to go into that field at the associates degree level...which one has the most job demand?
- IT - Computer Support Specialist
- IT - Network Specialist
- IT - Programmer/Analyst
- IT - Security Analyst
- IT - Web Developer/Administrator
My sister is thinking going back to school but doesn't want to do something not all that useful again. Her degree is in geography with an advanced certificate at the graduate level in GIS. She has been working in the field for I think five years but they just cut her hours from 32 to 28 (because at 32 hours they would have had to give her insurance) and don't pay all that well in the first place. Has looked and applied for jobs in the field but there just haven't been that many and now she has a house and is glued to location. Location isn't too bad....city of about 100K with the attached cities about the same size so not like it's a little country town.
She is pretty good with computers and is used to working on them all day and working in programs that require attention to detail.
I do not know a lot about IT things and am not really sure what the difference is between all those above.
Sorry, Jennifer, I know nothing of the IT world, but that's great your sis wants to go back to school!
My interview went really, really well, so thank you all for your support! I should hear something in a week. I have a good feeling about it, but you never know! If they don't offer me a place, my back up plan is to apply to the neighboring university to their program.
Bridget, I am so sorry about your step-son and his drinking. Alcohol can be such a horrible thing. I always said I'd never drink because I grew up in an alcoholic family, but when I moved to England and realized that people can actually drink and be cheerful, it was a revelation to me! I was just used to people getting depressed and knocking holes in the wall. Funny how normal is relative.
Shelley, I was wondering where you were! I'm glad your MIL has chilled a bit, but I'm sorry she yelled at G. Some times old people just can't handle young kids. My FIL can get really worked up by Travis and his 2 cousins who are the same age, but he never shouts at them. You can see him getting agitated but he usually turns it to humor, like by saying, "You little scamp; what are you doing!" LOL.
I feel like I have time to post now that my interview is done and over with. Before, I'd lurk on here a bit and then do some research. I'm glad it is over with; I was really stressing out and I am not used to feeling stressed!
Shelley you do that trip in one day? I would make it a two day trip I think!
Ashley I am so glad that the interview went well! I hate getting all worked up about stuff like that too. I'm generally not a stressed out person.
My mil is a yeller, always has been. Which is why I am so glad she lives far away. My dh has told me when his mother was yelling and ranting and raving, his dad would intervene, but then poor old FIL got too old for it.
Jennifer, we do it in one day. At times it feels like I am entering the 9 circles of hell ;) At least I am with my 2 favorite people. We have done it in 2 days, but we were spending so much money on Christmas we couldn't take the extra time or money.
My sister has adopted the most adorable puppy in the world. He is a cream colored dachshund. He has these coffee colored eyes that melt your heart, and is the sweetest, most easy going pup. I may just steal him!
Chrissy, did you survive today? Were they ok with rescheduling the interview?
In order, I would put
[*]IT - Security Analyst [*]IT - Network Specialist [*]IT - Computer Support Specialist
Tie[*]IT - Programmer/Analyst [*]IT - Web Developer/Administrator
This depends somewhat on location, but it has been our experience (Part of our operations is IT recruiting) that going into programming, the people doing the hiring are going to look for more of an educational background than an AA, whereas the first 3, AA would be enough, but hands on experience will bring you the better jobs. Has she considered going into the computational side of GIS? Some of our clients are oil giants, and people with specialization on the computational side of GIS are in demand. BUT, it would probably require a move to Texas.
I'm writing when I should be working. I'll read/respond to the rest later.
SCUBJIA, but just wanted to say I'm glad you are back, Shelley! Sorry about MIL.
And Ash, so great about your interview going well.
Shelley, that's awful about your mil yelling at G :(
Jennifer, around here the only job anyone would get with just an AA is the Computer Support Specialist. You can learn/work your way up to the other levels though, which is what I'm doing. And the AA in computer support specialist pays as much as someone with a masters in social work or teaching, so it's not a bad way to get into the field. Some places near me, like Lockheed Martin, would hire someone with an AA in CSS and allow them to advance IF they also earn in BA in the higher level IT jobs, but Cornell promotes based on on-the-job-experience. Which is awesome for me. I have the natural geeky tendencies and can learn any of it...so I have been. SCCM is my main goal right now-I LOVE IT! I have a lot of Active Directory (Windows Server 2003/08) experience as well and could probably sham my way into an Network Specialist position. I was domain admin on the Arts & Sciences network and managed to not blow it up :P lol
Ashley-I'm so excited your interview went well! This is going to be a long week waiting to hear from them. :fingerscrossed:
I did survive. It was emotional and actually quite rowdy. Not surprising, knowing my mother's side of the family. As nuts as they are, they're a funny bunch and they brought it out today. It's probably the best funeral I've been to, if that isn't too strange to say. There were a lot of laughs...hard laughs. Grandpa was a funny, funny man as are his kids. At the end, the minister called the kids up in birth order an all 9 of them stood in a line with grandma at the end. It was something to see them all together. I don't think they've been all together in 10 or 15 years.
Nothing was said to me about my FB rant, except one cousin asked if things were ok between me and our mutual cousin (we'd gotten into it that night). I said no, you know how these things go. Everyone will talk about it behind my back and act like everything is fine to my face. That's the Archibald way of dealing with everything. And that's fine. I have as little to do with them as possible. Even less now. And that doesn't bother me.
Chrissy I am sorry about your grandfather. What happened about your interview?
I feel guilty that I allow her to yell at my son. But that's the way it is with her. You just take it, or you will get much worse if you say something. And she never apologizes. So glad dh takes after his father.
My dad had to put his 15 year old dachshund to sleep and I feel so sad. 15 years ago we adopted 3 littermates, that were quickly given the nickname "Woozles" from Winnie the Pooh. That nickname has been my online nickname for years. Anyway, my sister had one of the dogs and he died in November, my dad had the other two. Now only one is left. When I think about the little brother without his sister, my heart aches. It reminds me of Where the Red Fern Grows. They literally have always been together and would sleep together all the time. On Friday my dad and step-mom noticed she had an abscess in her mouth, they took her to the vet and scheduled a surgery for the following week. Then Saturday, they noticed she had a huge growth on her neck-how the vet missed that I don't know. She stopped eating, couldn't sleep, was vomiting, she couldn't stand up, and peed all over my dad. They talked to the vet on Sunday about putting her to sleep, and he came that evening and did it in the house. I know she was old, but I feel like all she needed was surgery, she may have recovered. When she was younger she had a growth removed from her neck. I woke up last night crying about it, feeling guilty that I didn't push them to treat her. I know dad loved her very much and didn't want her to suffer, but maybe she would have been okay.
:comfort: Oh, I'm so sorry.
I would hate to not be able to say something to the mil. I don't know if I'd be able to even visit someone like that.
My interview was rescheduled to Thursday. I'm "meh" about it at best.
I'm sorry about your dad's dog, Shelley. Try not to feel guilty. We put a cat to sleep a couple years ago and I felt guilty about it so I know it's really hard.
To all you wierdo ladies eating bugs and slugs and whatnot....well, I was a biter/licker of things (my pencils and pens were always chewed up and disgusting). But I never ate bugs. At least not on purpose, lol. And here is where I will make the most embarassing confession ever. I was even grosser...I was...a booger-eater. There. I've said it. There are people who remember to this day. I feel I will never escape the humiliation.
Chrissy - I'm sorry about your grandfather, but glad the funeral drama was kept to a minimum. Sometime, sweeping things under the rug can be a useful short-term coping tool. I hope your interview goes well and they offer you oodles of money. You deserve it.
Shelley - I'm so sorry about your dad's dog. Having to make the decision to euthanize a beloved pet is always gut wrenching. I know I've always wondered whether I was doing the right thing, or if I should hold out a little longer. It was done with love and mercy in mind, and I think that is the best we can do.
Erin - When will you start hearing from grad schools?
Just a small rant/vent...when I post outside of this room, I try really hard to keep my language neutral and non-judgemental of others choices and it just chaps my rear when somebody comes behind me and posts something ridiculously inflammatory. It is sometimes all I can do not to fire off a scathing response. Grrrr.
Nah....there are some ladies who are persistent offenders. One in particular I'm pretty sure gets a big charge out of getting people riled up and having an argument. Which helps me resist responding. I know it probably bugs her when nobody takes the bait!
I confess... even though I invented the term SCUBJIA, the longer I spend away from this thread, the more intimidated I am about jumping in and trying to catch up. I know I missed a lot of opportunities to lend support these last few weeks, and offer a sincere, blanket apology. My folks have been in town and I have just been crazy active with them. Much love to you girls. I hope it's ok if I read backwards and start to chime in again.
:P Of course it's ok!!! Silly, we know you have a life away from here :)
*Resisting strong urge to tell off-color joke about in exactly what way I do that.*
LOL, Myles. You is crazy. We have missed you here. Start posting again immediately!
Shelley, I'm sorry to hear about your family's doggies. It is so hard to lose a pet that you've had for so long. I still dream about my chihuahua Noel who had to be put down at 17 human years old.
Dana, I so know what you mean about the drama! I have family on FB that I have had to hide because their drama is just too much for me.
