I know that some sushi rolls are ok to eat (california, eel, shrimp, cucumber rolls) but my husband is so concerned about the preparation of it. I was craving sushi so bad tonight but right when I was going to order it he told me that he was nervous because what if they use the same knife and cutting board that they used with raw fish. Needless to say we ended up getting Chinese instead. He told me that I should just make my own at home. No fun though, so I am hoping for some feedback from others on this matter. Is he being overly protective? Thanks!!!!

I think it is better safe than sorry, too. BUT, here is a great website about making sushi at home and then you can put your fears to rest!

Thank you very much. I am excited to try to do it at home. I am guessing you haven't had any sushi out at all? You are right, better to be safe than not...and with how crazy pregnant women's cravings are, one minute you want something and then 20 minutes the thought of that is dreadful!!!! Thanks again for that website!

I eat the cooked sushi about once a month. I haven't had any problems and the people at my local sushi bar tell me it is safe. So do what you think is best. I would agree that making it yourself is the safest!! :D

I see that you are only 11 weeks maybe wait till next week when you are in your 2nd trimester.

I love sushi....I love all the raw fish though--tuna, salmon, yellowfin, etc. I really don't like california rolls or the other cooked or veggie rolls. But I've been once since becoming pregnant and ate cali rolls and another cooked roll...not great but okay. I waited until I was out of my first trimester.
I no longer crave it because I know I can't eat what I really like.

I just had sushi out after my first OB apppointment last week. My DH asked my OB about it and he said any of the cooked stuff was fine and probably everything was OK as long as you know the sushi establishment is reputable. We only eat it about once every six weeks or so. I stuck with spider roll and the avacado and shrimp portion of the rainbow roll (expect for the one tiny piece of escolar :D )

I also read an articile about the fish being frozen to -40 degrees to kill any of the parasites. Ask your sushi place about their freezing/storing technique.

I wouldn't worry about it either. I have eaten California rolls, shrimp rolls etc since being pregnant and I wouldn't worry about cross-contamination. There is always that risk, I suppose, with anything at a restaurant, but relaxing about what you eat will make it easier. I am 31 weeks, 4 days along and my DH was freaked out about cold lunch meats for about 4 months and now I eat Subway like crazy :D

HTH!

I not only eat sushi (uncooked) I eat sashimi (raw fish) all the time. I ate it 2 meals per day with my son, who is now almost 11 yrs and perfect. I also eat it now. I figure all the Japanese people on the planet cannot be wrong.

Thank you for all your replies. I really appreciate it. I caved in and ordered in the other night, and it was the best thing ever!!!! I forgot how much I loved it. I stuck with the cooked stuff, but it was still heavenly!

Making it at home is just way too complicated, especially since I can just dial a few numbers and can eat it within 20 minutes!!!!

I've been craving sushi!!! I decided that I'll wait until the end of my first trimester to be on the safe side. After that, I think I'll probably eat the raw stuff. I agree with Kimmie....all of Japan can't be wrong.

I just posted a reply about this in my month but Man am I craving tuna sashimi. truth is that I have caved already, sneaking a few bites from my husband's plate, who's the real bastard for eating it around me and then giving it to me when I beg. I feel like a crack addict, I'm craving sashimi so badly. I'm thinking about it all the time and trying to rationalize how I could eat some. I mean I have totally quit using deodorant, (I mean I use this awesome hippy tofu crunch organic stuff) because I heard Secret was bad for the baby. I have virtually become a vegan. Oh yeah, I'm eating soy cream cheese on my whole wheat bagel. Because I heard it was good to limit my intake of animal products. I'm committed to being an awesome mom, I'm in it to win it, but then I do this completely destructive thing, the one thing my doctor told me not to do and eat raw fish. The guilt is killing me, and I still want raw fish. I could pull a tuna out of the ocean and bite it's ass off without batting eye before I took my next bite. That's how bad I'm craving a sashimi. Oh and here's the best part, before I was pregnant, here's me to my husband: "Sushi again, we just had it last week!" So it's definitely a craving. But my doctor told me absolutely not to eat under cooked meats.

Well you can see that they use all the same knifes and the same boards if you go where they make it in front of you. As I have my daughters love the raw stuff I cant eat any of it raw or cooked. I say better to be safe then sorry. But I wonder if the Japanese woman eat it while pg? I think they do? Maybe? My daughter takes Japanese I will have her ask her proffessor. She has only been in the States for 5 yrs so she should know.

I have not yet caved and gone out for sushi, but for the record, making it is fun! We used to have sushi night parties where we would rent Japanese movies, and make our own maki and sashimi platters.

Why I why did I read this thread about sushi!

It's moreso the restaurant environment and preparation of the food, not the risk of eating the fish itself, so comments on the pregnant population of Japan really doesn't apply here!

I've been told, same as eating deli meat, if you truly trust the restaurant and their food prep practices, then go for it. And Enjoy!
