All my 1st prenatal test were great...Excpet they checked my thyroid also & it was "slightly elevated" (they didn't give a number) They said it consisted with hypothyroidism & I am now supposed to take 50mcg of meds....Are there any other moms that had to deal with this & everything be ok with mom & baby...any complications or anything...It's my first pregnancy & I'm scared, worried & nervous about everything...I just want to have a healthy pregnancy & baby...I've tried to read up on it, but of course the more you read on the net, the more you worry...I did read that babies could have a developmental delay being born to mothers with hypothyroidism, etc....I just want to know that someone else has went through this & what to expect kinda...Also once your pregnancy was over, did you have to stay on the meds or did your levels go back to normal?

I would not worry.... I have hypothyroidism, the meds they r giving u r natural hormones ur body already makes... They r perfectly safe for u and ur baby. I had Hypo b4 I was pregnant, so i am still on the meds. Although my thyroid meds did go up when i was pregnant. I would talk to ur doctor about it, I think they will reassure u that the meds r safe for ur baby and actually necessary to keep u healthy :luck:

I have Hyperthyroidism and take meds for it. Had it before pregnancy but it gets worse during. Of my children, my girls are both special needs... one Autistic and one has developmental delays. My son is fine and I dont know what will happen with baby girl #3 that I'm pregnant with.

I was diagnosed with hypo during my second pregnancy. My daughter was born fine. I am currently pregnant with my third and still have hypo. My meds are way higher than yours. I wouldn't worry because your case is so mild. Just eat well and take your meds.

How severe is your hypothyroidism & what dose of mesd do you take? I hope this pregnancy is a H&H one momma! :)

I think my hypothyroidism is pregnancy related anyway...I took thyroid meds (25mg) when doing fertility treatments (and for that reason only) the Fert. Dr. said I could do without them or take them to help with the treatment & he decided to try me on them...that was over 2 years ago.
Since then I've had my thyroid checked AFTER stopping the fert. treatments & the thyroid meds (never needed the meds after fert. treatments)...Everything came back in normal range, so I think the "slight elevation" has to do with the pregnancy & the change in hormones...I hope it will go away once the baby is born...As for eating healthy, that I do...I'm not a complete "health freak" but I do like to eat as healthy as possible...But I still love some junk food at times! LOL ;) Did your hypo go away after your second pregnancy or did you have to stay on the meds? What dose are you on now?
I go back on Feb. 3rd for prenatal appt. & I think they will check my thyroid again, so I'll be sure to ask tons of questions this time around!

I don't have a thyroid had to remove it 2007 due to thyroid cancer. If you take ur meds and get ur numbers checked periodically u should be fine. I am around 5 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I see an endocrinologist and he likes to keep my numbers way down because of the chance of the cancer occurring.

I wouldn't worry about it and the thyroid meds are category a and absolutely needed when there is a need.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find out you had thyroid cancer? I'm 100% taking the meds. I want to do everything needed to have a healthy pregnancy/baby, so if this is what it takes of course I'm going too! :) I worry over every little thing anyway & I just like to get all the help/info I can on these types of things. Besides this being my first pregnancy, of course I'm a little more worried than most.

My niece and nephew had give me and DH a cold from HELL so bad that i lost my voice too. So we went to doctor to get it checked out and the doctor(not my regular doctor) told me that my thyroid was enlarged and we thought it may because of the cold so he told me to see my regular doctor in 2 weeks... After 2 weeks she tells me the same thing. So she send me to get an u/s done and the u/s results revealed that i had a nodule that was around 1.1 cms... it was itty bitty... and anything about 1 cm raises red flags which means you have to get a biopsy and most of the nodules are not cancerous. So it took a month for me to see a endocrinologist cause he is booked solid.. and the biopsy results came back as cancerous...

I think i have reasons for the thyroid cancer...one being when i as school and college i had a lot of acne... so one of the doctors i had been to in India(i was living there in india) around 1998 or so they did some beam radiation so i am thinking that caused it... plus (not 100% sure this may be the case) but i used to live 10 miles away from a nuclear plant (in the US)...

This cancer has a very good prognosis rate... Hope i didnt scare you or something like that...

thanks
Karen

No, you didn't scare me...I was just curious..I do worry about those things, but I try not to. Did you have any trouble beforehand with your thyroid or was it just the cold that made the concern to check? I've ALWAYS had enlarged thyroid (since I was little) I've had regular OB checkups & last April a regular physical....The Dr. doing the physical mention my thyroid being a little enlarged, but didn't sound concerned or anything, so I take that as a good sign...and my OB always checks when doing yearly visits & has never mentioned it...

I stayed on the meds after my second pregnancy. My dose is currently 175 but was at 100 before I got pregnant. I plan on doing a pretty intense workout plan after I give birth because when I'm consistently active my meds get down to 50. I knew I was probably going to have a thyroid problem because my family is riddled with the problem.

Thank you!! Is yours overactive or underactive? Mine is overactive. :\ I take 150mg of PTU (Propylthiouracil) a day. If I stop taking it, my thyroid goes insane.

I didn't have any thyroid problems. My pcp sends us for u/s just to be on the cautious side. So she doesn't mind running alot of test either she wants to be thorough and makes sure she has missed anything.

The only symptom we noticed was that I used come back from work and take a nap around 7 or 8 pm and we blamed it on my commute to work and just work in general after finding out then it made sense as to why I was feeling like that

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 8yrs ago and this is my 3rd baby since starting meds...I've never had any problems whatsoever and my kids are definitely not delayed in any way :).

The issues during pg arise when the hypothyroidism is untreated or inadequately treated. Now that you've been diagnosed and put on meds your dr will be monitoring you closely so I would say there's a nil chance your pg or your baby will be affected by the diagnosis :).
