View Full Version : Can exclusively BF babies overeat?

The thread on how much a baby eats makes me wonder if Lucas is getting too much. When my mom feeds him from a bottle, he regularly takes down 5 oz right away, and usually wants more, even if it's only been 2.5 hrs since his last feeding.
When I pump, I'm getting about 7 oz total now. When he eats thoroughly from both sides (which he usually does), I would think he's getting about that much, right?
Should I be concerned, or is this normal? He's just over 6 weeks...

The rule of thumb is that bf babies self-regulate. Between the baby and your body, you have a uniquely evolved system that works out just right. If nothing else, if baby has "overindulged" through comfort sucking or whatever, baby will spit up any excess. Since he is taking some food via bottle he might be getting slightly more than he "needs" but I wouldn't worry. Feed him as much as he wants when he indicates he's hungry.

babies takein food differently from child to child. Some take in a lot less often, some a little more often, some consume tons, some a little. Your milk is right for your baby. Your amounts are right for your baby. Sometimes when they are eating they are not getting much out, especially when they are learning. It may be that your baby just wants the comfort of sucking. Your breasts adjust for the need, so don't worry too much about it. As the previous poster mentioned, they spit-up excess if neccessary.

You have to take into consideration growth spurts that happen every month. During those weeks (1 or even 2), your baby will be nursing much more and eating much more.
