View Full Version : Help:Question about taking antibiotics
I have mastisis so now I'm taking 500mg of Dicloxacillin.
1) I know it'll pass through breastmilk. what is the affect that it will have on the baby?
2) If it does affect the baby, anything I can do to help prevent any issues?
3) I'm currently pumping at work but have been giving her frozen milk that I started stashing 2 months ago. Do I continue to freeze milk now (which would have the antibiotics in it) to be fed to her later (so I can give her the oldest milk) or feed her the fresher ones now or dump the fresh ones until I'm done w/ the antibiotics?
4) Does the BM that I pump now (w/ antibiotics) change when it gets frozen?
This BF thing is SOOO HARD. *sigh*
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry you're dealing with mastitis, that's a bummer :(
1) I know it'll pass through breastmilk. what is the affect that it will have on the baby? Your doctor knows you're nursing, so, they prescribed something safe for BFing. However, the abx passing thru your milk can upset baby's tummy and cause thrush. Thrush is a beyotch to deal with, it hurts and can be a pain to get rid of as you can pass it back and forth. Plus, since you're feeding EBM, the bottles/nipples can get contaminated with it, too. ugh. Check out kellymom.com for signs of thrush in you and the baby
2) If it does affect the baby, anything I can do to help prevent any issues? Yes. You can add yogurt and probiotics to your diet. You can also put some probiotics in bottles of EBM to help thwart any tummy issues in baby.
When I was on abx, I tossed all the milk I pumped. I didn't want to risk reintroducing the possibility of thrush months down the road.
4) Does the BM that I pump now (w/ antibiotics) change when it gets frozen? Again, I would toss it...

Hugs! I have recurrent mastitis (6 times in 2 months!) so I feel your pain. I have been on many different antibiotics. We have never had thrush. I nursed, pump and froze all through it. Otherwise I'd be dumping constantly because I literally had it every other week.
Now I am on clindamycin every day and I take diflucan once a week to prevent thrush.
My LO is doing great, the antibiotics do not hurt them at all.
GL!
I hate to throw out 10 days worth of breastmilk :-( So...should I not be nursing her either. Just pump and dump until I'm off the antibiotics?
Or take the chance that there's no affect on the baby like "aurora"?
