I was wondering what happens when a mother smokes and BFs? My mom was saying how she was appauled that a friend is smoking while BFing...I never did find out why it was apauling. I know it can't be the best choice obviously but now it has me wondering...what are the negitive affects on the baby?
(FYI: she smokes outside, never near the baby and always washes her hands and changes her shirt)
I am just curious...

Nictone is passed into breastmilk, I believe.

Here's more (http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/smoking.html).

Thank you for the link. I have a hard time searching the internet from work since everything is usually blocked...except this site. LOL.

Yup. I looked it up too but could only find studies talking about women to smoke a pack a day.

I would also suspect that nicotine can be passed to the baby, making the baby a nicotine addict as well. I hope she quits smoking as unless she takes a shower after every cigarette, I'm sure the baby is still inhaling the fumes from her skin as well.

My DH smokes a cigar some nights before bed and even after he changes his clothes and washes his hands, he still smells of smoke. It makes me ill and I have to force him to shower. I can only imagine how it will affect a baby.

I think the nicotine only stays in your system for about an hour or so. So if you nurse say every 2-3 hours and have one right after nursing there should not be any passed to your baby. That being said - is it a good idea? Not really. Plus you never really know if you can get all the toxins off your body and clothes.

I wouldn't be appalled at the idea but I wouldn't be impressed. I was a little taken back when I once witnessed DH's friend's wife go outside for a cig and then nurse the baby right after. It just didn't seem right. I don't even think she washed up! And she is a nurse!

Well now my question would be, did she smoke while pregnant b/c it seems odd to stop for nine months only to start smoking once baby is born?
