I defrosted some milk this morning from late September when preping one of N's bottles for the day for my mom and was using some of the excess from it in his morning cereal. I tasted it b/c I was using new cereal and I taste everything i give him and it tasted soapy!?!?! It was definitely the milk, not the cereal (which has little taste). It wasn't sour but definitely soapy and in my opinion, unappealing. Does anyone have any idea if it had gone bad, or any thoughts?
I ended up dumping the bottle (sob) b/c I was concerned. I have a couple of more bags in the freezer from September but I'm worried that they've turned, and am now kind of unsure about my October and November bags too. Help!

Soapy=excess lipase. Kellymom.com has info on that if you do a search.
I think the recommended storage time for frozen milk in a fridge/freezer (ie the freezer half of a combo appliance) is 3-4 months and up to 12 months in a standalone deep freezer.

Thanks. My fridge is a subzero and the freezer keeps ice cream hard (it's below 0 degrees, F - so the LC i've seen told me it's like deep freeze and it should keep for 6 months.)

But, the freezer temp doesn't have anything to do with the excess lipase, that's just something that happens to some women's milk once it's expressed. kellymom.com will have information on scalding before freezing to minimize this issue :)

Or if baby takes the milk fine, there's no need to worry—it's just a taste thing.
Here's the lipase info from Kellymom (http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/lipase-expressedmilk.html).

Oh yes, totally understood - I just didn't want you guys to think i was feeding him old stale AND smelly EBM :eyeroll:
Since he really hasn't seemed to have a problem with the milk and it's not harmful, i probably won't scald it - adding one more step to boob and breast milk maintenance process may throw me over the edge!

Thanks again. I read all I could find. He takes bottles of fresh EBM and some frozen (I try to use mostly fresh, but I have a stash I'd hate not to use) when I'm at work and never seems to have a problem. I think this only happens to my milk when it's frozen not refrigerated, actually. I tasted it this morning b/c the consistency of the oatmeal was weird (I bought a different cheaper brand) and there was that soapiness. He happened to be fussy and rejected the oatmeal but he had also been up since 5.45am  and wasn't in the best of spirits!
