a breastfeeding mommy,
I am just starting formula. I made it to 4months my goal was 6 months so I almost made. We are seeing if the formula helps Kurt gain weight. If you want an update on Kurt's GI appt. today I posted a thread called Update on Kurt in the new moms forum.

Glad you made a decision you're happy with.

What's your weaning plan?

I thought cold turkey? Hmm, maybe I'm wrong.

I dunno. I was hoping you girls could give me advice on how to wean. Kurt is my first so I dunno what to do

Wow - has anyone else done that? It's called "weaning" for a reason.

I'd drop a BF session and replace it with formula - do that for a week plus and then drop another. And/or ask an LC's advice?

Good luck!

Well see they want me to give him 30oz of formula a day so that would basically be replacing all of the bf'ings. so How can I acomplish they 30oz of formula and wean from the boob?

Well.....you could feed him formula and then let him nurse afterwards if he wants to. That way he's still getting the comfort of nursing. I don't know though...I know very little about weaning right now.

I would ask your doctor - they recommended to just drop BF completely and put him on formula? Do you know if they work with a lot of BF moms and understand how it affects your body and the baby's? It seems radical to me to just turn it off and make him a 30 ounce/day formula baby overnight, but maybe they have better info?

Hope the transition is smooth for both of you.

A pediatrician isn't going to be able to direct you w/BF - it's not their area. I'd call an LC.

She doesnt see a Pedi, she sees a general practitioner, their family Dr. I would possibly suggest but touch with a LC for sure but feed formula then let him nurse or pump and mix the two together so they equal how much he needs for that bottle and your supply should slowly go down if you are just pumping and not nursing. I'm totally not for sure on that- I just know pumping isnt always as efficient as nursing.

I don't know anything about weaning but I read before that you shouldn't just drop it completely - you can get blocked ducts and get mastitis. I'd start by dropping a feeding or two (depending on how engorged you can get). Then after a week add another feeding and so on.
There is a thread on weaning in this part of the forum, you may want to read it. Good luck!

I weaned my daughter at about the same time as you. I just didn't enjoy breastfeeding at the time. I just started replacing more meals with formula, pumping a little or hand expressing just enough to where I wasn't overengorged..Seriously,in a week I had no more supply.

could you call the LC at your WIC office? but i wouldn't go cold turkey. replace a feeding with formula every few days. masitis is PAINFUL, i wouldn't want you to get it.
