View Full Version : Question about starting solids?
What's the best time to start introducing solids?
Also, I know the baby will continue to drink breastmilk or formula until a year. How does that work once you start to introduce solids? Do you replace a meal of breastmilk for solids, or do you give her both?

Here in canada, pediatricians want us to start solids at 6 months. begin with Rice cereals, then barley then the rest. They recommend to introduce each new food for 3 days before moving on to another one.
There's a chart to follow to know when to introduce veggies and meats. I don'T know it all by heart. Your pedi should give you the documentation.
At 6 months, it should not affect the amount of milk to baby gets. It would do so around 9 months. During the first month, babies will eat about a tablespoon of cereal 3 times a day. That's just to ease them gradually, and prepare their digestive system for food.

You don't have to start with rice cereal. Avocado and sweet potato are 2 popular first foods. There are helpful links in the solids area of feeding. wholesomebabyfood.com is one of them I think. You should give only a tablespoon or so at a time, mixed very thin with either formula of breast milk. You would typically give a bottle/nurse and offer solids an hour or so after.
Have fun!

I never replaced formula with solids. I always start with rice cereal, just my preference. Then I go to oatmeal and then add in a veggie. Usually sweet potatoes first :D

We just started a solid feeding once a day then gradually upped it in between nursings. It doesnt take the place of any nursing session. We started with rice cereal and are now doing applesauce and pears and peas. Sweet Potatoes made my baby too gassy, he was super fussy both times we tried them.

we attempted at 6 months... he really didn't want it.. .it was about until he was 12 months that he really started to enjoy solids.

I started when my DD was showing signs she was ready for solids...smacking lips & reaching for food. We started with oatmeal (never did rice) then went to applesauce, and next sweet potatoes. I always BF first, then give solids. I also recommend the website www.wholesomebabyfood.com
We started Griffin at 8 months. We didn't replace a feeding, I would give him booby and then let him eat or vice versa.

We started oatmeal once a day at 5 months 3 weeks, in addition to their regular bottles. We are just now upping the oatmeal to twice a day and will start veggies in about a month. We usually give the solids before their bottles.

As far as when to start, follow your baby's cues. This (http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/solids-when.html) is a great guide.
We started with banana at 5months 3weeks when Ava was screaming and crying for our food. She thrust it back out a good bit so we waited a few more weeks and reintroduced. :)
