Is there any antibiotic that isnt safe for BFing? I'm only asking because my friend had been BFing her first son and then got bronchitis really bad. She has asthma issues too. They told her she had to stop BFing because of the antibiotic. Her son was only 2 weeks old at the time. He's over a year now, but she is pregnant again and due in April. She wants to BF this one too. I thought antibiotics were safe except for the yeast factor.

There are a few, but I don't know them off the top of my head. There is an awesome sticky at the top of the forum relating to meds and bf. One of the links (toxic.net or something like that) allows you to put the med in and check on it. I am on antibiotics for a stomach infection, and there are 6 different options, from what I researched (I need to take 2 antibiotics at once for this). Of the 6, 2 were contraindicated for bf, so that still gave me a few good options. In the future, your friend should check into what antibiotic they want to give her and if there are other options.

I'm currently on an antibiotic for a bladder infection. This is the second time and they are safe. Just make sure the doc knows and prescribes a safe one.

Many antibiotics and also asthma medications are safe during breastfeeding. :)

I always check the LACTmed database and Dr. Hale.

Most antibiotics are safe, I have taken keflex, augmentin, dicloxacillin and currently take clindamycin every day for recurrent mastitis...and my DS is doing great!!!! Breastmilk with antibiotics is still better than formula!
