If so, can you talk to me about it?

I have to have my wisdom teeth out and go under general anesthesia to do it. I will continue to pump but do I need to throw out the milk for awhile?

I think you have to consult with your doctor and LC. Sorry, don't have a personal experience :hugs:

I've had oral surgery twice now while BFing. I never went under general anesthesia so I don't know the answer to that. I would just find out what the metabolization time is for the anesthesia. Most gas anesthetics metabolize really fast so I don't think that's an issue. And if they use propofol to put you under that also metabolizes quickly. Something like 8 minutes, I believe. So I would probably treat it like alcohol- when you don't feel it any more you're good to go. But definitely check with your Dr.

I think once you don't feel the effects of the anesthesia it is out of your system but I would check with an LC. I would have at least a 2 day milk supply built up and pump and dump while you can feel it or for the first 24 hours....has your LO taken a bottle? I'd be a little concerned about nipple confusion since she is so young.

Also do you have to get anesthesia? I had my bottom 2 out with just novicaine. It wasnt pleasant but that would solve your problem.

The other issue is pain medication. I was in AGONY when I had mine out and was taking vicoden constantly. I had weaned just before and I was glad I did. You will probably be stuck with only avdil or tylenol for pain while BFing - which may be fine. Plenty of people are fine with just that.

Do you have to do the surgery now? Can you hold off? If you do have to I am sure it will work out. Good luck!

I believe you will have to pump and dump....and for quite a while. Pre-kids, I had surgery and was told to hold off on taking my other meds for a whole month. It could take quite a while to leave your system. Definitely consult an LC.

I had to pump and dump for 4 hours. Just long enough for the meds to be out of my system

Unfortunately, two different LCs and my doctor have said different things. I have to have the general anesthesia but I think I could try taking tylenol and advil post-surgery to avoid narcotics. I wish there was just a clear answer, but hearing some of your experiences helps a lot!

I got my top wisdom teeth taken out when DS was 2 months old. I went under general anethesia. I was told that once the effects of the anesthesia wears off, it is ok to bf. I did'nt feel completely back to normal for at least 4 hours after I got home and didn't feel comfy bfing until the next day, so have at least one days worth pumped. Regarding the pain killers, I was cleared by my pedi to take ONE vicodine every 6 hours, but that was bc ds was 2 months old, having a 1week old may be different. I would pump right before taking the vicodine just in case I didn't feel comfortable nursing him if I could feel the "vicodine" feeling as a back up. Good luck to you. I know how frustrating it is to get conflicting information.

I hope you have a wisdom teeth experience like mine b/c I didn't need narcotics after my surgery. Hopefully you can just pump and dump the day of the surgery and then breastfeed after that! I just took alleve or something like that after my surgery. I really never had bad pain unless I ate something too cold or too hot....make sure you eat everything at a mild temp! Ice cream was the killer for me! I remember not feeling the effects of the anesthesia sometime that evening and I had my surgery first thing in the morning. I didn't have it while bfing so I can't tell you how long to pump and dump. GL!
