I would say go as far as to inquire but simply do not agree to sending any money or providing any personal info like your SSN until you know for sure it is legit.
On the radio the other day they said something like 80% of work at home things were not legit, so you are smart for being skeptical!

You should never ever have to spend money to work from home in a set up like that. That's what I'd use as my guage to see if it's a scam or not, but I agree with looking into it more. It doesn't have all the typical red flags that the scams have, KWIM? But yeah...don't give any personal info beyond possibly your address.

If it is legit, Id be interested! I have to find something, as my husband isnt working and as of right now, we have NO income coming in.
If they want you to pay for anything though, its probably not legit :(

It sounds like they don't want money they want to give me a printer and the equipment to do the job. I am just concerned about identity theft and that its a scam to get my social.
I have been looking for a home job because we I need to help DH pay bills.

Can you research the company to see if they're real?

The big reason I am doubting it that they never mention the company. The name or where they are or what they do or a website.

You can go to the Better Business Bureau's website and do a search for the company. If there have been any complaints about the company (for scamming or whatever else) they might come up. I think this is the website to look up businesses:

So you haven't replied yet? I would and ask detailed questions. It will show your interest and your intellect and scare them off if it's not legit.

I don't think it's legit, but it doesn't hurt to do further research. The main reason I don't think it's legit though is because a few months ago there was a story on the news here with people printing and sending packages for a company and it turned out that some of the information and goods in the packages were stolen. One of the people even got charged with a crime so I wouldn't trust it.

I don't think it's legit either. Just the mere fact that the only 2 questions they asked were about your printer and cartridge experience. Sounds fishy to me. Once you said they never mentioned a company name that was my red flag right there.

smells like a scam to me then. any reputable company would include that information in the intial contact. I wouldn't give them any of my information. Who knows, the printer could be stolen or they may ask for a "deposit" for the equipment.

Okay so I was thinking it was a total scam. But this morning I get email from the guy offering me the job. He gives me the companies website and a fax number. All they want from me is to sign a contract and fax it to them. They say they will then send you money to buy a printer and all the supplies, even stamps for the job are prepaid.
They can cut you a check or do a wire transfer.

I would love to do something like this if it was legit.I would just be careful and also ask them if they are hiring you as an employee or a independent contractor. If you are a independent contractor remember to set aside part of your pay check to go towards taxes.

Its actually a company in Switzerland. They sent me all the info on the company so I know now who they are and where and what they do. I am an employee and not a contractor. I get a salary and the position is called part-time associate. But I would have to pay my own taxes since I doubt businesses in foreign countries take out US taxes.

It's a scam - If you can't speak w/someone in person, and if it's out of country don't do it! My DH got slapped w/$14,000 debt when we were first dating by doing something like this. They had a "website" that disappeared as soon as his money disappeared from his checking account because the checks they sent him were fake - good fakes, but fake nonetheless.

It looks like its the same deal but I didn't see anyone lose any money on those websites. Just they showed they got similiar or the same emails. I def will follow some of those sites opinions on how to deal with things.

Fake!! My mom got a check like the one mentioned in the above site. She took it to B of A and was told the account does exist, and the check was real, but it was an overseas account, and they couldn't tell her right then if there were funds or not. The bank kept the check, and told her they wouldn't trust it. I think eventually that account was closed, but others spring up just as quick.
Pretty much, you deposit the check, pay them the difference, then the check bounces and you're out the difference. Not cool!!

After listening to you guys and I really appreciate all your help.
I wrote this letter to my contact:
Hi Mr. Meier,
In a previous email I sent the signed contract. However I just wanted you to be aware of this requirement in the contract:
A. The Company shall support any lack of technical equipment. For expenses, the company will redirect a US client’s payment to employee, which will arrive no longer than 7 business days. Due to the fact that the client’s invoice value can be higher than the expenses, the employee has the obligation to forward the rest of the company’s money in 48 hours from receiving it.
When I receive the check for the supplies, I need to make sure the check clears from the banks and that can take longer than 48 hours. So I would want a check for as close to possible the expenses so I don't need to send the money to anyone and also so once the money clears that I can go out and purchase the supplies. My point is that there is no way I can forward the money as I need to verify that the US client's check is valid and won't bounce. Therefore I cannot forward in 48 hours from receiving the check but I can in 48 hours from whenever the bank tells me the check has cleared and been paid and I buy the supplies I need.
If this is not acceptable then I cannot accept the job offer.
Sincerely
Sharon Rosenthal

I would cease communications with them. I think you if you already returned a signed contract, that is too much information. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
Besides, what company do you know would write a check for brand new employee way over the amount of the items? usually the company would have you purchase the items and then submit receipts for remimbursement OR send you the equipment via a reputable carrier. Why isn't the check drawn on US funds from a US bank? If this company can hire US citizens, surely they can afford to have a US bank account.
Out of curiosity, what is the website or better yet, tell your contact you have lots of interested friends!!!

Will do. DH thinks I won't hear from them again but we will see.
I really can't thank you guys enough. I asked a few people I trust if it could be a scam and not one of us could see the scam in the scenario. Its one reason why I love APA. The resource is just so huge.

Flags
1) If it sounds too good to be true...
2) Based in another country
Please remember that scammers are probably THE most Brilliant people out there... I wouldn't trust anything these days...especially something that sounds way too good to be true. I've also heard of people getting checks, trying to cash them upfront to prove it's legit....and somehow they get your bank information. Be VERY careful with any e-mails that you receive.

Sorry if someone already wrote this, but I saw a segment on Oprah once where the company wasn't trying to scam the worker by stealing from them, but actually using them to ship things illegally from inside the country. The poor lady thought she was printing out labels and shipping things for a legit company, but then one day FBI agents showed up at her door and arrested her for stealing! So beware of that! I think if another country's "company" is targeting the U.S., there has to be a reason why, because they can always find someone who is willing to work for less in other countries.
