I have it. I got it put in at my 6 week post partum check up. It was kind of painful to have it put in, a lot of cramping for about 2 hours but after that I haven't experienced any pain. It did cause me to bleed for about 2 weeks after it was inserted. I was also told and read that it can cause longer periods and more cramping, but since I have really light periods and didn't want any hormonal BC because of BFing and because they make me unable to lose weight, the Paraguard was the best option. I still haven't had AF since my DD was born but I have had some spotting every couple weeks for a day or so since its been in, usually after we DTD. Other than that, I love it for right now and it's nice to not have to worry about BC and it last for 10 years. Also, if for some reason I go crazy and decide to get PG again, I can always have it removed. I didn't want to go the permanent route as I never know what my thought process will be in the next month or year, etc., so I wanted to keep that option open.

That sounds like what I want, the only issue is my h/insurance doesn't cover it- only the insertion- so I have to pay $500!

its a newer IUD but its made with copper and has no side effects like the other IUD's or b/c out there. It also lasts for 10 years

I want it after this baby and I have really short light AFs too so the longer AF will not an issue. This sounds even better than I thought!

that's strange, my insurance was the other way around. I had to pay for the insertion and not the IUD. Since the IUD was considered B/C they said that I could purchase is a prescription and then bring it to my doctors office. We didn't need to do that in the end. I called my insurance company and requested that they look into the Mirena IUD. They didn't have much information on it yet (I got it in early 2007). I waited about 6 weeks and got a letter from my insurance company that they would pay for it but not the insertion.
Also I went to the Mirena website and it tells you how to request approval from your insurance company, etc. I can't imagine that the paragard wouldn't have the same information available.

eta. Mirena also lets you purchase it from them on a payment plan if needed. (you still have to have it inserted though)

Is your insurance denying based on it being a newer IUD? Because if so...the paraguard has actually been around waaaaay longer than the Mirena! Like decades longer! The one they're using now is a different version, but it's the same thing.
I've got it. And I'd suggest doing as Kendra said and appealing it to your health insurance-it IS a birth control. I had to appeal mine because it was being looked at as a medical device. Once I appealed it, no problems having it covered...multiple times in fact.
I've had no pain issues with insertion. No undue cramping with AF, my AFs haven't been much heavier, either. I'm on my 2nd or 3rd Paragard for various reasons, but they've all been just fine for me, comfort wise. I know some women cramp pretty good for weeks after the Mirena IUD insertion. I've had both IUDs and while I didn't have too much pain with the Mirena, the insertion was more uncomfortable than the Paragard.
For me...the Paragard's the only form of birth control that I'll probably ever use, short of my tubes being tied, for the rest of my life (at least at this point).

I'm sorry for the situation you and your wife are in. However, with all birth control methods there is a risk of pregnancy-INCLUDING the paraguard IUD. This is a risk that you should have been informed of when your wife had it inserted. I also have gotten pregnant on the paraguard IUD more than once, but I in no way, shape or form blame the manufacturers for that fact...merely human nature. We are not MEANT to NOT get pregnant, really...we're meant to reproduce when fertile, KWIM? Birth control of any form other than abstinence/natural family planning is throwing outside factors into the body and no one can predict how any one person's body is going to react to it.

I too agree with Tif.. I have the Mirena IUD.. I knew when I got it that there is a chance of pregnancy as there is with any type of birth control. (except obstaining) even though I sympathize with your situation, you really can't blame the manufacturer for the product not working when you knew there was still a chance of pregnancy... KWIM??

I rather take the risk of getting PG than having my tubes tied. I cannot wait to try the paragaurd. Most women who get PG on the IUD never carry as taking the device out causes loss.

A. I LOOOOOOVED paraguard. I had it for a few years before I got pregnant with Annie. The insertion hurt, for sure...but I didn't know that you should take about 5 times the normal ibubrofen beforehand to help with the pain. I had some cramping on the first day of my cycle for about 6 months afterward also, but it was never bad enough that I couldn't maintain normal activity :) Not using hormones...awesome. Not having to delay "sexy time" to put on a condom....awesome. Being able to take it out and get PG within a month.....also, awesome.
B. As far as cost goes...If you have a Planned Parenthood near you, they offer discounts usually to women wanting an IUD when their insurance won't cover it.
