Getting pregnant can prove much harder than many anticipate. In fact, 1 in 6 couples face infertility issues and this statistic continues to rise. A wide variety of factors can impact one’s ability to conceive, including age, diet, environment, cycle regularity, and a host of other variables.
While education and a healthy lifestyle are paramount to increasing your conception odds, below are some recommended products that have helped tens of thousands of couples to conceive.
Know When You Ovulate: Identifying your Fertile Window
As a woman can only get pregnant 4 or 5 days each cycle, identifying these “peak fertile days” may be the most important factor when trying to conceive.
The fertile window begins roughly 4 days before you ovulate, and ends approximately 24 hours after the egg is released. To improve your odds of getting pregnant, identifying your peak fertile days, and specifically determining your ovulation date, is extremely important. There are a number of tools to help you accurately and affordably predict your ovulation date:
Urine-Based Ovulation Tests (OPKs) LH urine-based ovulation tests are relatively inexpensive and a popular choice for ovulation prediction. These tests identify the spike in your luteinzing hormone (LH surge) that happens roughly 24 to 48 hours prior to ovulation. As successful conception generally occurs within 36 hours of the LH surge, a positive test allows you to properly time intercourse. LH Ovulation tests come in both midstream (encased in plastic and held directly in the urine stream) and less expensive, but equally accurate, test strips (which are dipped into a urine sample). Combination packs of multiple LH ovulation tests and hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) pregnancy tests are also available.
OvaCue Fertility Monitor. This device easily and accurately predicts ovulation up to 7 days in advance and confirms when ovulation has occurred. The OvaCue does this by tracking electrolyte level changes in your saliva and cervical mucus. It’s simple to use, takes only a few seconds each day with no messy urine testing or any additional products (i.e. test sticks) to buy. OvaCue comes in a stand-alone option or a mobile version that connects directly to iOS (iPhone, iPad) devices and select Android devices.
Basal Temperature Charting (BBT) Daily recording of your waking temperature with a basal thermometer is a popular means of charting your fertility over time. As the upward shift in basal temperature occurs after ovulation, it won’t actually predict your ovulation date but it is a great way to familiarize yourself with your cycle. And gone are the days of paper charting – online tools are now available to easily track your basal temperature and other fertility indicators. OvaGraph, one such tool, is the official charting app of Toni Weschler’s best-selling book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility. OvaGraph is free (no download or subscription fees) and also integrates with TempCue, a smart basal thermometer that plugs into your mobile device to seamlessly upload readings. Visit the OvaGraph website today and download the free iOS or android app.
Ovulation or “Ferning” Microscopes These are inexpensive, reusable devices that predict fertility by detecting changes in estrogen levels. The “estrogen surge”, which occurs roughly 72 hours prior to ovulation, is demonstrated by crystal-like patterns that can be seen in your saliva when viewed through a small microscope. This pattern is often referred to as “ferning” and, when visible, ovulation is likely to occur within the next few days. Ovulation Microscopes like the Fertile Focus are discreet, reusable and generally under $30. Many women will choose to use an ovulation microscope along with LH ovulation tests for a more accurate ovulation date prediction.
Hormonal Balance, Cycle Regularity & Egg Health
Fluctuating hormone levels, stress, illness, insomnia and even diet may cause cycle irregularity, all of which can make predicting ovulation a real challenge. While many women have regular, clockwork cycles, unfortunately, varying cycle length is all too common. In addition, as the total number of eggs women are born with diminishes over time, egg quality also suffers which can be detrimental when trying to conceive.
While there are certainly cases where prescription drugs or medical intervention may be needed to successfully conceive, more and more women are benefiting from natural supplementation with clinically validated vitamins, minerals, and fertility-enhancing herbs.
FertilAid for Women is the #1-selling fertility supplement in the U.S. and was formulated by Dr. Amos Grunebaum, Director of Obstetrics and Chief of Labor & Delivery at Weill Cornell Medical Center. FertilAid contains a complete prenatal vitamin formula, including the optimal dosage of folic acid recommended for trying-to-conceive women. In addition to vitamins and minerals, FertilAid contains ingredients such as Vitex agnus castus (Chasteberry) to help balance hormonal levels and promote cycle regularity. Helpful for those with varying cycles and/or short luteal phases, FertilAid is also beneficial when coming off birth control to restore regular ovulation.
OvaBoost is a popular supplement formulated to improve egg quality and ovarian function. It is particularly helpful for women over the age of 30 or for those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). OvaBoost includes vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that have been clinically demonstrated to improve egg health. Studies have shown that women undergoing IVF experienced substantial improvement in their egg quality when taking myo-inositol, melatonin and folate together – all key ingredients of OvaBoost.
FertileDetox is a doctor-formulated supplement that helps your body eliminate harmful toxins that may hamper your ability to conceive. Unfortunately, the food we eat, water we drink, the air we breathe, and even the products we use in our everyday life can all negatively impact your reproductive health. FertileDetox helps support your body’s own detoxification systems and is beneficial to use before, and during, your conception efforts.
FH PRO for Women is a clinical-grade fertility supplement recommended by OBGYNs and fertility specialists. Designed to help complement those undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology treatments such as IVF and IUI, FH PRO can also be used by women conceiving naturally and is particularly helpful for those with PCOS or of advanced maternal age.
Enhancing His Fertility There is an unfortunate tendency to look at the woman first when a couple is having difficulty conceiving. In reality, male factors play an equal role when determining root causes of infertility. Sperm counts have decreased significantly over the past few decades and continue to decline by as much as 2% each year. Age, stress, exposure to environmental toxins, and deficient diets can have a detrimental effect on sperm parameters such as count, motility and morphology.
FertilAid for Men, also formulated by Dr. Grunebaum, contains vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and a vast array of antioxidants to help improve reproductive health. Clinically shown in a double-blind, placebo controlled study to increase the total number of motile sperm, FertilAid for Men is the top-selling male fertility supplement in the U.S.
CountBoost and MotilityBoost for Men are companion products to be taken along with FertilAid for those who have been diagnosed with either low sperm count or low motility (or both). These supplements contain additional antioxidants and other ingredients that have been shown to positively impact these specific parameters. Packages are available for men wanting to take all three supplements in an effort to increase their numbers.
FH PRO for Men is a clinical-grade fertility supplement recommended by REs and fertility specialists. It contains a comprehensive range of antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids, and minerals and is commonly recommended to be used in conjunction with Assisted Reproductive Technology procedures such as IVF or for those that have been diagnosed with low sperm parameters.
The SpermCheck Fertility Test is an inexpensive, convenient home test that measures sperm count with 97% accuracy. In the privacy of your own home, SpermCheck will confirm if your count is in the normal range (20 million sperm per milliliter or more) or if it is below the healthy threshold.
Ensuring an Optimal Vaginal Environment for Fertilization
Cervical mucus plays a pivotal role in the conception process by protecting sperm and facilitating travel in order to fertilize the egg. Cervical mucus should have an “egg-white” consistency – clear, slippery, stretchy, and semi-transparent. A lack of this fertile quality cervical mucus around the time of ovulation greatly decreases your odds of getting pregnant.
FertileCM is a natural supplement formulated by a leading fertility expert to promote the healthy production of fertile quality cervical mucus. In addition to improving both the quantity and quality of cervical mucus, it also helps to strengthen the uterine lining for implantation of the embryo. FertileCM is an excellent product to take if you experience any vaginal dryness or thick, tacky, “hostile” cervical mucus around the time of ovulation.
Another product to consider is a sperm-friendly lubricant like Pre-Seed. Most lubricants will actually harm sperm and can be detrimental to your trying-to-conceive efforts. Pre-Seed has been clinically shown to mimic your body’s natural fluids providing a safe environment for sperm.
